About The Position

This is a high-impact Senior Research Scientist role focused on pathfinding leading-edge techniques for practical quantum computation on Google’s state-of-the-art processors. Leveraging a strong theoretical foundation, you will bridge the gap between abstract protocols and real-world hardware, developing methods that accelerate performance on current noisy processors and toward future error-corrected systems. As a senior member of the team, you will have a large scope of influence, leading the way in the theory, numerical modeling, and optimization of existing approaches while playing a key role in complex and flagship quantum experiments. Your work will not only evolve the state-of-the-art but will directly influence the trajectory of the field and the realization of large-scale quantum computation at Google. The full potential of quantum computing will be unlocked with a large-scale computer capable of complex, error-corrected computations. Google Quantum AI's mission is to build this computer and unlock solutions to classically intractable problems. Our roadmap is focused on advancing the capabilities of quantum computing and enabling meaningful applications.

Requirements

  • PhD degree in Physics, Computer Science, Engineering, Quantum Information Science, or a related technical field or equivalent experience.
  • 2 years of experience in Quantum Computing, Chemistry, Computational Physics, Mathematical Modeling, or Applied Mathematics.
  • Experience in noisy quantum systems, quantum noise modeling, and error mitigation/suppression techniques.
  • Experience with experimental operation of quantum systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience contributing to or leading projects within large-scale industry or scientific collaborations.
  • Demonstrated expertise in quantum protocols, characterization methods, and advanced error mitigation/suppression techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and drive the research and development of error mitigation, suppression, and robust protocols. Architect the theoretical mitigation frameworks for flagship experiments and demonstrations.
  • Bridge the gap to experiment by driving rigorous numerical simulations and modeling. Work in a tight feedback loop with experimentalists to solve the bottleneck problems defining the path to noise-free results.
  • Work across several Google teams to collaborate on real-world use by the teams and the research community.
  • Pioneer and publish high-impact findings. Facilitate impact on experiments and the research community, through proactive, clear communication across theoretical and experimental teams and conferences.
