The Senior Research Scientist; Chemical Development's principal responsibility is in the design, synthesis, purification, identification, process development, optimization, and scale-up of chemical intermediates and target compounds. The scientist is expected to provide contributions to the chemical problems assigned. Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 5 years’ relevant experience, or a Master’s degree in Chemistry or related field and a minimum of 3 years’ relevant experience, or a Ph.D. in Chemistry or related field
  • Chemical Hygiene training
  • Ability to read, analyze and interpret common scientific and technical journals, financial reports and legal documents
  • Ability to respond to common inquiries or complaints from customers, regulatory agencies or members of the business community
  • Ability to write speeches and articles for publication that conform to prescribed style and format
  • Ability to effectively present information to top management, public groups and/or boards of directors
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios and proportions to practical situations
  • Ability to apply principles of logical or scientific thinking to a wide range of intellectual and practical problems
  • Ability to deal with nonverbal symbolism (formulas, scientific equations, graphs, etc.) in its most difficult phases
  • Ability to deal with a variety of abstract and concrete variables
  • Must pass a background check
  • Must pass a drug screen
  • May be required to pass Occupational Health Screening

Responsibilities

  • Uses research knowledge to effectively plan and manage day-to-day work cycle operations of a project; stays current with changes in applicable field. Ability to solve problems and develop new methodology
  • Synthesize target compounds utilizing a blend of both classical and modern technology effectively
  • Optimize reaction conditions in accord with visual observations to allow rapid, successful scale-up of target compounds
  • Provide technical solutions to a wide range of difficult problems. Solutions are imaginative, thorough, practicable, and consistent with organization objectives
  • Use a broad spectrum of practical laboratory skills as needed; including advanced methods of purification of solvents and reagents, running reactions under anhydrous and oxygen free conditions, and using advanced methods for isolation/purification of sensitive materials
  • Utilize all available techniques and analytical instrumentation for monitoring laboratory experiments and the analysis of products effectively
  • Plans work to meet personal project objectives and deadlines; assesses the needs and makes changes in process, work flow and/or assignments. Coordinates multiple, concurrent assignments on a multi-faceted research project
  • Manage workload and time to perform multiple projects effectively, and ensure all necessary paperwork is completed on a timely basis
  • Leads exchange of research information through technical assistance and instruction. Contributes to preparation of publications, reports or experimental protocols; makes presentations
  • Assists in proposal development
  • Recommend and implement methods to increase the quality of products and/or service
  • Conduct laboratory operations in a safe manner. Maintain familiarity with the Chemical Hygiene Plan. Exhibit safety awareness and safe work practices
  • Follow responsible actions regarding chemical disposal. Maintain compliance with all regulations at the federal, state, and local levels
  • Conduct literature searches for specific target compounds, structures related to the target compound, or to determine specific conditions for compounds and reactions. Keep abreast of current scientific literature and discuss new findings with colleagues
  • Find new and better ways of performing job by challenging established procedures. Require minimal supervision, bring assignments to completion independently
