The Leidos Health Solutions Business Area has an opening for a Senior Research Psychologist to join the Operational Readiness Directorate at the Naval Health Research Center in San Diego, CA. This position will provide support to the Epidemiology and Data Management Support Department and involves research on the physical and mental health of military personnel to improve health, readiness, and quality of life. This work will include collaborating with other researchers in the Department, contributing to the implementation and execution of research studies, conducting statistical analyses, and drafting scientific documents such as abstracts, manuscripts, presentations, and funding proposals. This position also includes management of staff and related tasks to ensure efficient planning and execution of research objectives.

  • Design and conduct research studies on the physical and mental health of U.S. military personnel that are innovative, relevant, and actionable in a military setting.
  • Serve as a co-investigator on multi-year research studies examining healthcare and health-related outcomes among military personnel using surveys and validated psychological instruments, assessments, and tools.
  • Contribute to study administration tasks, such as the development, modification, and submission of IRB protocols and other regulatory documents.
  • Provide expertise in research psychology and collaborate with department and external researchers on projects that utilize advanced research methods.
  • Utilize statistical software and programming languages (e.g., SPSS, SAS, or R) to conduct analyses across multiple integrated datasets.
  • Identify and apply appropriate statistical methods to evaluate data, interpret results, and identify clinical and military relevance.
  • Write and prepare scientific reports and manuscripts for peer-reviewed journals, abstracts, posters, and presentations on research findings.
  • Review scientific reports, manuscripts, and other documents for accuracy in content, statistics, and data interpretation.
  • Prepare and submit research proposals for funding.
  • Attend scientific meetings and present results and study findings to appropriate audiences.
  • Manage a multidisciplinary team of researchers and other professionals.
  • Oversee the planning, execution, and monitoring of research projects, ensuring alignment with project goals and customer requirements.
  • Develop and maintain project timelines, deliverables, and milestones to track progress and ensure timely completion.
  • Manage multiple concurrent research studies, prioritizing tasks and adjusting workflows to meet deadlines and evolving project needs.
  • Coordinate with cross-functional teams, including researchers, data analysts, and external collaborators, to ensure seamless project execution.
  • Identify risks and challenges in project execution and propose mitigation strategies to ensure project continuity and success.
  • Prepare and deliver project status reports and updates to internal and external stakeholders.
  • Ensure compliance with research protocols, regulatory standards, and project management best practices.
  • Work independently to achieve day-to-day objectives that impact operational results and project deliverables for the department.
  • Ensure tasks are completed on time for mission requirements.
  • Work with department staff on other tasks and duties as needed for customer mission.
  • Travel domestically and internationally as required for project, program, and contract needs.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required for the customer research mission.
  • Ph.D. in psychology or related field from an accredited U.S. college or university.
  • Minimum of 6 years of experience conducting research on military health issues, including physical and mental health, health behaviors, injury, and related outcomes.
  • Minimum of 4 years of experience leading research studies in a military research environment.
  • Expertise in statistical theory and methodology used in psychology.
  • Expertise in statistical analysis software (e.g., SPSS, SAS, or R).
  • Demonstrated understanding of methods and techniques of compiling, analyzing, and evaluating statistical and other research data for prospective and retrospective study designs.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication, organizational, problem-solving, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to complete all aspects of psychological research from study conceptualization through manuscript publication.
  • Demonstrated ability to self-start, plan and prioritize tasks, demonstrate leadership, and work independently and in a team.
  • Demonstrated ability to establish and maintain cooperative and professional working relationships with military leadership, team members, and internal and external collaborators.
  • Demonstrated ability to manage multiple research projects at once and reprioritize as necessary.
  • Experience managing project timelines, deliverables, and ensuring alignment with organizational goals.
  • Strong ability to identify and mitigate project risks while maintaining compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Hold an active Interim or Secret Security clearance.
  • Previous experience conducting military health research for the US Navy.
