About The Position

The Enrico Fermi Institute (EFI) is a multi-disciplinary institute at the University of Chicago that assists with fundamental research in particle physics, astrophysics, geophysics and accelerator physics. It is part of the Physical Sciences Division (PSD). The EFI is also involved in training the next generation of researchers and is committed to creating a supportive environment that encourages teamwork among collaborators from all walks of life. The Senior Research Professional will facilitate and promote research on neutrinos: both research and analysis and through detector R&D. The candidate will have extensive experience leading a group both on analysis in small groups and within a large collaboration, and in a laboratory setting. The candidate will have experience recruiting, engaging, mentoring, and supervising students from the undergraduate level through graduate school and for post-doctoral scholars and research scientists. The candidate will have experience setting a vision and strategy for new programs in research and in education.

Requirements

  • Minimum requirements include a PhD in related field.
  • Minimum requirements include knowledge and skills developed through 5-7 years of work experience in a related job discipline.
  • Knowledge of basic computer proficiency including computer programs and standard laboratory equipment.
  • Knowledge of relevant scientific fields.
  • Demonstrated problem-solving, organization, analytical, and coordination skills including attention to detail.
  • Demonstrated excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to read and comprehend scientific and technical literature, and methods to stay abreast of developments in the field.
  • Ability to work independently and as a part of a team and interact with a diverse workforce.
  • Excellent time management skills and the ability to handle multiple, concurrent tasks within deadlines with minimal supervision.
  • Must be able to prioritize urgent tasks while ensuring established deadlines are met.
  • Ability to be flexible and adaptable to changes in workflow and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • PhD in Physics.
  • Significant relevant research experience, including postdoctoral experience.
  • Experience as an academic scientist and/or faculty member.
  • Experience leading a large research group including students, post-doctoral scholars, research scientists, and technical staff.
  • Experience working in higher education or an industrial research environment.
  • Experience and demonstrated proficiency in techniques across multiple fields.

Responsibilities

  • In collaboration with the principal investigator, oversees complex neutrino research and analysis.
  • Mentors and supervises students on developing, designing, and conducting research projects on the SBND detector, DUNE project and in the laboratory.
  • Uses specialized expertise to guide experimental design, providing students with regular feedback and mentorship.
  • Directs projects conducted by students and post-doctoral scholars in neutrino science and specifically related to the Fermilab neutrino program and the detector R&D for neutrino physics.
  • Directs and oversees the ONAOSI program within the Enrico Fermi Institute which facilitates immersive, hands-on research experiences for undergraduate students.
  • Designs and oversees the ONASI program including designing the curriculum, establishing the program goals and evaluating the outcomes, garnering the annual support, evaluating student applications, and identifying appropriate scientific mentors and projects for the students.
  • Develops and identifies opportunities to expand the ONAOSI summer intern program as appropriate with a vision towards a more worldwide program.
  • Serves as a resource for collecting data and performing analysis.
  • Facilitates and promotes a research project by providing scientific or intellectual information.
  • Trains and mentors laboratory personnel.
  • Performs other related work as needed.
