About The Position

The Research Technician III compiles and interprets statistical data in the investigation of public health issues; technical responsibilities consist of the preparation of detailed plans for study, the preparation of detailed reports on phases of major studies. The RT III recommends, devises and applies procedures for proposed studies; develops and works with the PI and other technical staff on the programming and machine processing of data; analyzes quantitative and qualitative statistical data and prepares interpretative reports and graphic presentation of research material; supervises and assists other technical research staff; initiates or recommends new studies or investigations, additional uses of existing data, modifications of procedures; represents the research staff at meetings and conferences to present research findings, programs and research objectives. Supervisory responsibilities include the direction of student assistants engaged in the compilation and analysis of data. The research technician will work independently and with the PI on the data compilation preparation and analyses of data using rigorous statistical and epidemiologic methods, including: Reporting/Presentation/Implementation: Review literature related to child health, disparities, obesity and the influences of schools and policies related to nutrition, physical activity and food environments near schools Devise, implement and maintain an electronic-based bibliographic system to enable a methodical organization of our multi-topic literature, using endnote and excel software programs. Generate multiple reference libraries, organize files and create summary tables of evidence for analysis Assist in the preparation of research findings for manuscript development and dissemination; Assist the PI with submission of abstracts for conference presentations, preparation of posters, research briefs, and power point presentations Deliver professional presentations at annual research conferences. Conduct periodic policy analyses directly related to our research, including changes over time. Compile/Manage/Analyze Statistical Data: Compile, manage, merge and clean multiple data sources; Prepare, maintain and update codebooks for each and all data sources; Implement statistical analyses, including the development of code for descriptive and inferential Statistics, summarize data, prepare tables, and graphs to depict research findings; Project coordination and management Assist the PI with project coordination and management, including agenda setting for research meetings within and across institutions, and ensuring overall team research tasks align with timelines and fluctuating deadlines; Support the PI in managing and coordinating project administration, including procedural tasks such as IRB submissions, consultancies, data procurement, funding reports, travel coordination for conferences and research presentations. Use software tools (e.g., trello, endnote) to ensure successful project management Other duties as assigned

Requirements

  • Thorough knowledge of research techniques, including the planning of studies and investigations, determining variables, developing bibliographical and other sources of data, and preparation of research reports
  • General knowledge of statistical principles and procedures, including methods of collecting statistical data, simple correlation methods, time series analyses, analysis of frequency series, sampling techniques, and construction of index numbers
  • General knowledge of sources of information on social, economic, and population trends in California.
  • Ability to gather, compile and interpret data collection instruments (e.g., questionnaires) and other surveys from local, state and national sources
  • Ability to gather, compile, and analyze research data, and to present data in tabular, graphic, and pictorial form
  • Ability to prepare and work clear and comprehensive reports
  • Capacity for independent and creative thinking and writing on research and statistical problems
  • Ability to plan, organize and supervise the work of a small team.
  • Have the ability to welcome and work with complexity, ambiguity, flexibility and fluctuating deadlines

Nice To Haves

  • Masters Degree in the Social Sciences, public health or related field including economics.
  • Three years of research experience
