About The Position

The Toxicologist provides expert toxicology support to ensure compliance with global chemical registration and food contact regulations across Sherwin-Williams’ Global Packaging Division. This role partners closely with Regulatory Affairs, Research & Development, and cross‑functional global teams to support new product commercialization, product reformulation, and Safety by Design initiatives. The position oversees external toxicology studies, interprets scientific data, and serves as a subject matter expert on human health and environmental risk. The Toxicologist also contributes to advocacy efforts, internal training, and continuous improvement of toxicological capabilities and processes worldwide Additional Information: This role is not remote/hybrid. This role will report to Sherwin-Williams Sewickley Office, 2000 Georgetown Dr., Sewickley, PA 15143. Travel Required: 10% Job duties include contact with other employees and access confidential and proprietary information and/or other items of value, and such access may be supervised or unsupervised. Requirements

  • Must be at least eighteen (18) years of age
  • Must be legally authorized to work in the country of employment without needing sponsorship for employment work visa status now or in the future (e.g., OPT, CPT, H1B, EB-1,etc.)
  • Must have a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) in toxicology, biology, pharmacology, public health, or chemistry
  • Must have three (3) years experience as a toxicologist
  • Must be able to demonstrate proficiency of designing, conducting, interpreting and reporting toxicity studies; with the proven capability to successfully oversee this process
  • Must have a strong understanding of basic principles of toxicology
  • Must have experience using a variety of IT applications
  • Must have experience in paint & coatings or chemical industry

Nice To Haves

  • Have familiarity with global chemical regulations, including TSCA, REACH, and other international registration and notification programs
  • Have knowledge of OECD Guidelines for the testing of chemicals is highly advantageous
  • Have proficiency with scouting, reviewing, categorizing, and summarizing scientific literature to address technical questions is highly desirable
  • Have a Diplomate of the American Board of Toxicology
  • Have experience with Product Development
  • Have experience with HEARS, PV, RMDM, PIM, SharePoint, Microsoft Office, OnBase, Business Objects

Responsibilities

  • Toxicology support for global chemical registration and food contact notification regulations
  • Maintain expertise in human health and environmental testing and data requirements for global chemical registration and notification requirements
  • Oversee toxicology study placement at Contract Research Organizations in support of global new product commercialization, including study initiation, monitoring, and interpretation of results
  • Partner with Regulatory Affairs teams in North America, Asia Pacific, Latin America, and Europe to achieve compliance with chemical registration and food contact notification requirements
  • Toxicology support for research and development
  • Partner with the research and development team on new product development and product reformulation to select materials that minimize risk using the SW Safety by Design process
  • Provide role-based toxicology training for technical and regulatory team members and other groups within Sherwin-Williams
  • Serve as a subject matter expert, supporting research and development needs
  • General toxicology support
  • Contribute to advocacy efforts through reviewing and generating materials; partnering with Governmental Affairs, Regulatory, and Commercial Teams; and representing the company in trade associations, customer meetings, or other external meetings.
  • Assist with portfolio evaluations and alternatives assessments for materials of regulatory interest
  • Partner with the Marketing and R&D organizations to ensure robust product safety evaluations within new product commercialization and technology assessments
  • Manage toxicological data within Sherwin-Williams systems
  • Advance internal capability for toxicological in vitro studies and in silico modeling
  • Conduct scientific literature reviews for various business needs
  • Assist in the ideation and writing process for peer-reviewed journal publications
  • Continuous improvement
  • Implement process or system changes necessary to improve efficiency or accuracy of work
  • Engage with professional societies, such as the Society of Toxicology, to monitor scientific advancements and maintain any professional certifications
