About The Position

Leads the operation and direction of an overall special program unit, park or recreation center and may manage the maintenance at one or multiple municipal facilities. Oversees and participates in the planning, organizing, and directing of specialized recreational activities, events, and programs; conducts recruitment, training, scheduling, supervision, and evaluation of personnel.

Requirements

  • Associate degree.
  • Three (3) to five (5) years of experience in planning, organizing, promoting and supervising a wide variety of program activities. Additional qualifying experience or completion of coursework at an accredited college or university in a job related field, may substitute on a year-for-year basis for the required experience or education.
  • Three (3) years of supervisory experience
  • Possess or be able to obtain a valid State of Florida driver's license within 30 days of hire.
  • If assigned to a licensed afterschool facility, must enroll in the Florida 40-hour Child Care Introductory Training for School-aged children within ninety (90) days from the date of assignment and successfully complete such training within one (1) year.
  • If assigned to a licensed afterschool facility, may be required to obtain the Child Development Associate credential within one (1) year after successful completion of the Florida 40-Hour Child Care Introductory Training for school-aged children.
  • If assigned to a licensed afterschool facility, may be required to obtain a Directors credential within six (6) months after receipt of the Child Development Associate credential.
  • If assigned to a facility with a swimming pool, may be required to obtain a Certified Pool Operator Certification, American Red Cross Basic Water Rescue Certification and Lifeguard Management Training Certification within one (1) year.
  • If assigned as the Head Swim Coach, must possess comprehensive experience with thorough knowledge of the sport of competitive swimming, its rules and regulations and must be a USA Swimming registered coach in good standing with ASCA Level 4 Coach certification. Operational skill and knowledge of Hy-Tek software and the web-based Team Unify platforms. All certifications must be kept current during employment.
  • If assigned as the Head Masters Swim Coach, must possess comprehensive experience with thorough knowledge of the sport of masters swimming, its rules and regulations and must be a US Masters Swimming registered coach good standing with US Masters Swimming Level 4 Coach Preferred and ASCA certification. Operational skill and knowledge of Hy-Tek software and the web-based Team Unify platforms. All certifications must be kept current during employment.
  • If claiming Veteran's Preference, candidates must attach a DD214 Member 4 form, and the City of Fort Lauderdale's veteran's preference claim form (J-204) to the online application.

Responsibilities

  • Exercises professional judgment, responsibility and leadership in the activities of City recreation parks and pools
  • Estimates and requests personnel, equipment and material needs required to successfully implement various recreational programs
  • Prepare and submit service agreements, contracts, and program proposals
  • Oversees revenues and expenditures associated with programs
  • Maintains inventory and checks safety and quality of equipment and supplies prior to use
  • Assigns and supervises subordinate personnel in specific program areas
  • Assists with development of marketing materials
  • Advises and instructs personnel on methods and techniques for improving programs
  • Researches and analyzes programs, participation and attendance; prepares weekly and monthly reports of participation and revenues
  • Prepares recommendations and reports for short and long term actions required to meet the recreation goals and needs of the community
  • Works with staff, professional instructors and volunteers to initiate and implement programs
  • Collaborates with neighborhood and activity interest groups and other agencies that serve the recreational needs and interests of the community
  • Meets with internal team to discuss programming, methods, equipment and operating procedures
  • Assists in the actual production of special events, checks and schedules; maintains and oversees use of facilities, equipment and supplies for assigned activities
  • Recommends, in the interest of the city, that eligible applicants be hired and that subordinate employees be transferred, suspended, promoted, terminated, reassigned or disciplined; participates in the adjustment of grievances; participates in the administration of agreements resulting from collective bargaining negotiations
  • Performs related work as required
