About The Position

Plans, organizes, promotes and coordinates a variety of District recreation programs, community services, and special events; performs one or more major technical and/or administrative support functions for designated program area(s) such as program and/or facility scheduling, coordination of billing activities, budget development and administration support, and/or development and validation of payroll for signature approval; participates in the recruitment, selection and training of part-time and seasonal staff, contract instructors and volunteers; provides daily oversight to program activities, evaluates program effectiveness and develops change recommendations; supervises, guides and evaluates the work of seasonal and part-time staff and volunteers; prepares a variety of reports, schedules and other administrative materials; establishes and effectively maintains a variety of program records and files; develops and distributes public service announcements and other marketing materials to promote assigned programs; responds to requests for information pertinent to District recreation programs and services and related policies, procedures, schedules and fees, independently resolves customer issues and complaints or refers for resolution to appropriate District staff; performs special projects as assigned and related work as required.

Requirements

  • Equivalent to the graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with major course work in public recreation planning and administration, leisure management or a closely related field; and
  • Equivalent to a minimum of one (1) year of full-time experience performing recreation work comparable to a Recreation Coordinator with the District
  • Knowledge of: principles, practices, philosophy and objectives of recreation programs and services
  • Knowledge of: principles and techniques of planning, organizing, evaluating and promoting recreational activities for children, youth and adults
  • Knowledge of: principles and practices of marketing, promotions and customer service
  • Knowledge of: principles and practices of effective supervision, training and performance evaluation
  • Knowledge of: basic budget administration and fiscal control methods
  • Knowledge of: District policies, procedures, rules, operations, programs and services
  • Knowledge of: laws, rules and regulations relative to recreation programs and services
  • Knowledge of: health, first aid and safety procedures and requirements for recreation programs
  • Knowledge of: techniques of effective report preparation and presentation
  • Knowledge of: modern office practices and procedures
  • Knowledge of: personal computer operation and software applications
  • Knowledge of: filing methods and recordkeeping systems to effectively maintain a variety of records
  • Ability to: assist with the planning, organization, promotion and coordination of assigned recreation programs, programs and events
  • Ability to: coordinate, supervise and evaluate the functions and activities of assigned recreation program(s)
  • Ability to: assist with the recruitment, selection, training, supervision and evaluation of non-exempt program staff and volunteers
  • Ability to: work with a variety of cultural and ethnic groups in a tactful and effective manner
  • Ability to: analyze problems, identify alternative solutions and potential consequences and implement appropriate course of action
  • Ability to: plan, develop and implement marketing and promotional efforts for assigned program(s)

  • Possession of a valid class C California Driver’s license and a satisfactory driving record
  • Some program assignments may require possession of specialized certifications such as: certificates of completion of Lifeguard, CPR, AED, O2, T22, Certified Pool Operator or Aquatics Facility Operator, Water Safety Instructor or Lifeguard Instructor.

Responsibilities

  • Plans, organizes and coordinates assigned recreation program and/or community service activities; and provides input to the development of program and operational policies and procedures.
  • Provides oversight to program activities; evaluates the success of assigned program area(s) on a regular basis and develops recommendations for necessary changes and adjustments to enhance program effectiveness.
  • Participates in the recruitment, selection, supervision and training of part-time and seasonal staff, contract instructors and volunteers; evaluates staff performance for recommendation, works with employees to correct deficiencies and/or recommends corrective action.
  • Assumes responsibility for the performance of one or more major technical and/or administrative support functions for assigned program area(s) such as program activity and/or facility scheduling, coordination of billing activities with other program or operating units, and/or development and validation of payroll for signature approval.
  • Provides input to the development of program budget(s); monitors and controls expenditures; orders program supplies and equipment; maintains an appropriate supplies inventory; and generates and maintains a variety of budget related financial records and reports.
  • Prepares annual, monthly and weekly activity and staffing schedules, a variety of administrative and statistical reports, correspondence and other administrative materials; and establishes and ensures the proper maintenance of all program files and records.
  • Responds to requests for information relative to District recreation programs and services and related policies, procedures, schedules and fees; resolves customer issues and complaints or refers for resolution to appropriate District staff.
  • Coordinates the scheduling and supervises the use of recreation facilities; and works with the staff of the Park Maintenance Division to ensure the safety, security, cleanliness and orderliness of District facilities.
  • Promotes and markets a variety of existing and new recreation programs and services; develops and distributes press releases, public service announcements, flyers and other marketing materials to facilitate public awareness of available programs and services.
  • Performs special projects as assigned and other job-related duties as required.
