Red 6 is seeking a Senior Mechanical Engineer to contribute to the next generation of augmented reality (AR) hardware systems for military training and commercial applications. In this role, you will lead the mechanical design and development of precision components and assemblies for cutting-edge AR devices, including headsets and optical systems. You will work at the intersection of advanced technology and practical engineering, collaborating closely with cross-disciplinary teams to create hardware that meets the demands of real-world use. Your expertise in CAD, precision mechanical design, and system integration will help drive the development of innovative solutions that redefine training and simulation capabilities. This is a rare opportunity to shape the future of AR technology in a high-impact, mission-critical environment.

  • Lead the design and development of precision mechanical systems and components using SolidWorks, ensuring functionality, manufacturability, and reliability.
  • Create prototypes, conduct rigorous testing, and iterate designs to achieve optimal performance and durability.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to integrate mechanical designs with optical, electronic, and software systems.
  • Perform detailed structural, thermal, and tolerance analyses to ensure mechanical systems meet stringent performance and environmental requirements.
  • Generate comprehensive CAD models, detailed drawings, and engineering documentation for manufacturing, assembly, and quality assurance.
  • Work closely with suppliers and manufacturing partners to ensure high-quality production of components and assemblies.
  • Bachelor’s Degree in Mechanical Engineering or a directly related field (Master’s preferred).
  • 5+ years of experience in mechanical design for high-performance hardware systems.
  • Proficiency in computer-aided design (CAD) for 3D modeling and technical drawings; SolidWorks is highly preferred.
  • Strong foundation in precision mechanical design, with expertise in Geometric Dimensioning & Tolerancing (GD&T) and tolerancing for tight tolerances and high-performance systems.
  • In-depth knowledge of design for manufacturability (DFM) and design for assembly (DFA), ensuring efficient and reliable production workflows.
  • Experience leveraging 3D scanning technology as a tool for reverse engineering, design validation, and prototyping.
  • Familiarity with 3D printing technologies and their application in prototyping and low-volume manufacturing.
  • Advanced analytical skills, such as FEA and CFD analysis, to validate designs.
  • Demonstrated ability to mentor junior team members and contribute to team growth.
  • Proven ability to thrive in a fast-paced, interdisciplinary team environment.
  • Clear, professional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Industry experience in AR/VR hardware development or optics integration.
  • Knowledge of materials and manufacturing processes, including injection molding, additive manufacturing, optics manufacturing or lightweight composites.
  • Experience with innovative designs for advanced display systems or spatial computing.
  • Out of the box thinker that thrives in an R&D environment.
