About The Position

The Museum of Modern Art is currently accepting applications for a Senior Publicist in its Communications and Public Affairs Department. Reporting to the Assistant Director of Public Affairs, the Senior Publicist develops and implements press and influencer strategies for the Museum's collection, assigned exhibitions and programs, public affairs strategy, digital initiatives, retail collaborations, and special events. Assists department leadership with executive communications, reputational issues management, and institutional fundraising and donor stewardship. Works with outside agencies on assigned publicity projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in journalism, English, communications, public affairs, or art history.
  • Five to seven years public relations experience in positions of increasing responsibility, or equivalent.
  • Proven track record of media placements in print, broadcast, and online media.
  • Familiarity with modern and contemporary art, and experience working with New York cultural press.
  • Prior experience working in a cultural non-profit preferred.
  • Experience with social media influencer strategy and content collaboration required.
  • Excellent written, verbal and interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to manage many projects simultaneously, establish and juggle priorities, successfully meet deadlines, and respond to a heavy load of press requests in a fast-paced, complex institutional environment.
  • Working knowledge of HTML and Photoshop is essential.
  • Some work on early mornings, evenings, and weekends required.

Responsibilities

  • Develops and executes press strategies, drafts press releases, assembles all related press materials, and coordinates press interviews and events for assigned projects, including: Museum collection rotations, acquisitions, and deaccessions; exhibitions and programs; and Museum events and initiatives.
  • Creates, updates, and maintains online press kits on the Museum's press web site.
  • Oversees, manages, and serves as on-site department representative at press previews, photo opportunities, and other press events and special events organized in conjunction with assigned programs and exhibitions.
  • Works closely with departmental leadership to ensure consistency of messaging across press outreach, community outreach, network cultivation, and issues management.
  • Helps build a network of press, influencer, civic, education, museum, and non-profit partners to strengthen New York City community awareness of the Museum and engagement with its programs.
  • Contributes to executive communications to build internal and external understanding of the Museum's mission and priorities.
  • Leads press strategy and coordination for annual Museum benefit events and other special events.
  • Serves as the department liaison to the MoMA Design Store and provides press and PR support for retail collaborations.
  • Oversees the department's participation in the Museum internship program.
  • Represents the department at internal and external meetings and events, as needed.
  • Performs any other duties reasonably related to the functions described above.
