Senior Prototype Engineer - positions offered by Ford Motor Company (Long Beach, California). Note, this is a hybrid position whereby the employee will work both from home and from the anticipated worksite. Hence, the employee must live within a reasonable commuting distance from the anticipated worksite. Collaborate with aerodynamics, engineering, and design teams to create visually, geometrically and functionally representative physical test properties. Develop unique approaches for using physical test properties to evaluate and define aerodynamic devices or user experiences in future electric vehicles. Hands-on cad design, fabrication, and assembly of static and functional prototypes at component, subsystem, and full vehicle level. Project manage and source components from internal and external vendors of waterjet and laser cutting, rapid prototyping, CNC machining, and composite layup.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree or foreign equivalent in Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronics Engineering, Structural Engineering, Materials Engineering or related field and 3 years of experience in the job offered or related occupation.
  • 3 years of experience with each of the following skills is required: 1. Utilizing relevant CAD software (3DX, Catia v5, or Solidworks) to interface with cross-functional data and performing design tasks that augment digital assets into physical properties and prototypes. 2. Interpreting and preparing 2D Drawings for manufacturing partners. 3. Analyzing early design concepts for mechanical and structural feasibility. 4. Creating robust and functional mock-ups for conducting preliminary user studies and ergonomic evaluation. 5. Building and assembling physical prototypes using hand tools, power tools, and light metal or wood machinery, while upholding safe practices.
  • 1 year of experience with each of the following skills is required: 1. Basic vehicle system terminology. 2. Evaluating vehicle architectures. 3. Performing benchmark analysis on competitive products.
