Duties, Responsibilities & Other The Senior Project Manager – Marine Structures represents the highest level in KCI’s Project Management career path for coastal and marine infrastructure projects. This role provides strategic leadership and technical oversight for highly complex marine projects and multi-project programs, including ports, harbors, waterfront developments, coastal resiliency, navigation structures, and offshore or nearshore facilities. This position plays a critical role in expanding KCI’s marine structures practice, strengthening client relationships across public and private maritime markets, and guiding project teams to deliver safe, resilient, constructible, and cost-effective marine solutions. The Senior Project Manager ensures seamless coordination among engineers, scientists, contractors, agencies, and stakeholders while navigating high-risk marine environments from planning through construction and closeout.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in related field (AEC Industry) and minimum of 6 years of related professional experience, or 10 years of equivalent professional experience.
  • Experience should include a track record of expanding project management duties.
  • Proven experience in project management roles, with a focus on managing larger-scale projects or programs.
  • Strong organizational and time-management skills, with the ability to prioritize tasks and manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively interact with clients, team members, and stakeholders.
  • Proficiency in project management software and tools, with the ability to develop and maintain comprehensive project plans and documentation.
  • Knowledge of industry standards and best practices related to project management, quality assurance, and safety protocols.
  • Effective problem-solving skills, with the ability to identify issues and implement solutions in a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong negotiation skills to manage contracts, scope changes, and stakeholder agreements effectively.
  • Strong understanding of accounting principles to effectively manage project budgets, financial reporting, and resource allocation.
  • Ability to complete the KCI PM Training and Contract Risk Training along with passing the PM Board within 6 months of start date.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage complex marine and coastal projects, including piers, wharves, bulkheads, seawalls, breakwaters, mooring systems, dredging support, coastal protection, and waterfront redevelopment.
  • Direct multidisciplinary teams consisting of marine structural engineers, geotechnical engineers, coastal engineers, environmental specialists, surveyors, and construction inspectors.
  • Develop and communicate comprehensive Marine Project Management Plans, defining scope, schedule, budget, quality, constructability, environmental compliance, and marine safety requirements.
  • Manage project scope and change control, ensuring alignment with client objectives, regulatory constraints, and marine construction realities.
  • Develop and maintain detailed project schedules, proactively identifying risks related to tides, weather windows, permitting timelines, marine access, and construction sequencing.
  • Oversee project budgets and cash flow, implementing cost controls to address marine-specific cost drivers such as equipment mobilization, specialty contractors, and offshore logistics.
  • Serve as the primary client liaison for marine owners, port authorities, municipalities, state DOTs, USACE, NAVFAC, and private waterfront developers.
  • Identify, assess, and mitigate marine-specific risks, including constructability, corrosion, scour, vessel impacts, environmental constraints, and life-cycle durability.
  • Apply deep knowledge of marine delivery methods (Design-Bid-Build, Design-Build, CMAR, progressive design-build) and construction practices to optimize project outcomes.
  • Mentor and develop Project Managers and Engineers within the Marine Structures group, strengthening KCI’s internal marine expertise.
  • Ensure compliance with KCI policies, Quality Management System (QMS), and marine engineering best practices.
  • Lead development and implementation of marine project safety plans, including vessel operations, overwater work, diving activities, and heavy marine equipment.
  • Ensure compliance with all applicable Federal, state, and local regulations, including USACE, USCG, NOAA, state coastal agencies, and port authorities.
  • Negotiate marine project contracts, scopes, and fees with clients, subconsultants, and specialty marine contractors.
  • Develop marine project schedules that reflect constructability, environmental windows, and concurrent task opportunities.
  • Prepare and manage client and subconsultant contracts.
  • Achieve or exceed utilization targets (typically 70–80%) while supporting marine business growth.
  • Track and report marine project performance metrics, budgets, WIP, AR, and cash flow monthly.
  • Prepare monthly project progress and completion reports and present results at Project Review Meetings.
  • Identify opportunities to improve efficiency and reduce costs through innovative marine design approaches, materials, and construction methods.
  • Serve as a key leader in growing KCI’s Marine Structures practice, identifying new opportunities in ports, coastal resiliency, waterfront redevelopment, and maritime infrastructure.
  • Participate in go/no-go decisions, consultant teaming strategies, and preparation of marine-focused proposals and SOQs.
  • Lead and support client presentations, pursuit strategies, and interviews for marine projects.
  • Strengthen relationships with port authorities, coastal municipalities, maritime agencies, developers, and contractors.
  • Support marketing efforts through project write-ups, photography, technical thought leadership, and conference participation.
  • Actively participate in at least one marine, maritime, coastal, or industry organization (e.g., PIANC, ASCE Coasts, Ports & Rivers Institute, WEDA, CMAA).
  • Provide full oversight of all marine engineering and project management deliverables required by contract.
  • Review and interpret marine construction drawings, specifications, geotechnical reports, hydrographic surveys, and inspection data.
  • Conduct site visits, marine inspections, and field assessments, including overwater and waterfront conditions.
  • Compare field conditions and inspection data to design assumptions and construction documents.
  • Lead or oversee preparation of marine structural designs, repair plans, condition assessments, and construction support services.
  • Resolve technical challenges during design and construction, applying sound marine engineering judgment.
  • Maintain current knowledge of marine codes, standards, and guidelines, including AASHTO, ASCE, USACE EMs, PIANC, and state/municipal waterfront criteria.
