About The Position

The Senior Project Land Surveyor is a senior-level technical leader responsible for managing all phases of surveying for multiple projects, typically within one primary project team. This position requires a licensed Professional Land Surveyor capable of independently conducting boundary analysis, preparing complex deliverables, directing technical staff, and overseeing QA/QC for assigned projects. The Senior Project Land Surveyor serves as Surveyor of Record for designated projects and plays a critical role in mentoring junior personnel, coordinating team workflows, and maintaining strong client relationships.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Geomatics Engineering, Civil Engineering, or equivalent years of experience in Land Surveying
  • 5+ years’ relevant survey experience
  • Professional Land Surveyor License (LS) in California
  • Project Management experience
  • General knowledge of computers, Microsoft office, Adobe, Internet, Bluebeam, etc.
  • Proficient experience with AutoCAD Civil 3D, required.
  • Experience managing staff; ability to provide direction, coaching, and feedback to junior staff
  • Demonstrated ability to manage team workloads, utilization goals, and project budgets
  • Effective and professional communication skills with internal and external stakeholders.

Responsibilities

  • Lead and manage all surveying phases for assigned projects, overseeing scope, schedule, budget, and performance metrics (KPIs).
  • Coordinate with project managers, engineers, field supervisors, and drafting staff to ensure efficient project execution.
  • Develop project plans, technical approaches, staffing needs, and timelines.
  • Manage contractual documents, including scopes, fee estimates, and change orders.
  • Ensure appropriate risk management practices and adherence to regulatory requirements.
  • Conduct project closeout, including final deliverable review and record documentation.
  • Serve as Surveyor of Record for assigned survey projects.
  • Independently prepare all major survey products, including: Records of Survey ALTA/NSPS Land Title Surveys Boundary and topographic surveys Short/long plats, subdivision maps, and final plats Boundary line agreements and adjustments Easement exhibits and legal descriptions
  • Perform detailed boundary analysis using applicable state/federal laws, legal principles, and case law.
  • Process/adjust GPS and conventional control networks; prepare least-squares adjustments as required.
  • Apply coordinate rotations, translations, and datum transformations as needed.
  • Review and process field data, notes, and sketches for accuracy and completeness.
  • Conduct QA/QC reviews of all project deliverables produced under their supervision.
  • Resolve boundaries using accepted boundary and legal principles and case, state and federal laws.
  • Apply rotations and translations when necessary.
  • Act as primary point of contact for clients, regulatory agencies, subconsultants, and internal teams.
  • Coordinate field-to-office workflows to ensure timely and accurate deliverables.
  • Provide clear, consistent updates to project managers and senior leadership.
  • Represent the survey discipline in client meetings and project coordination discussions.
  • Delegate tasks to survey technicians, field crews, and drafting staff, ensuring alignment with project deadlines and quality standards.
  • Monitor employee utilization, workload balance, and project-level financial performance.
  • Conduct employee evaluations and participate in professional development planning.
  • Mentor junior team members in boundary analysis, computation methods, mapping standards, and industry best practices.
  • Support department-level initiatives, training programs, and process improvements.
  • Assist with developing and refining surveying standards, procedures, and workflows.
  • Build and maintain long-term relationships with clients and partners.
  • Identify opportunities for repeat business, new work, or expanded services.
  • Participate in proposals, including writing project approaches, defining scope and staffing, and preparing fee estimates.
  • Attend industry events, client interviews, and professional association activities.
  • Contribute to strategic discussions related to market positioning or service growth.
  • Other duties as assigned
