About The Position

As a member of UL Solutions' Energy Storage Advisory team within the North American Renewables business, the Senior Project Engineer provides technical and commercial due-diligence support for Independent Engineering (IE) and Technical Advisory (TA) projects across energy storage, solar + storage, and hybrid renewable portfolios. This position supports project financing, tax equity, sales, and acquisition transactions by evaluating project contracts, financial models, technical designs, and documentation to assess risk, performance, and bankability. The Senior Project Engineer integrates input from multidisciplinary teams to deliver consistent, high-quality advisory reports for clients that include lenders, developers, and investors. The ideal candidate combines strong engineering fundamentals with commercial awareness and communication skills. They are capable of engaging directly with clients, guiding internal contributors, and helping shape UL's technical advisory practice through mentorship, thought leadership, and business development participation. This role can be hybrid from Latham, NY, Houston, TX, Northbrook, IL, Oakland, CA, or remote in the United States.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, physics, or a related technical field; advanced degree preferred.
  • Minimum of 5 years of experience in renewable energy, energy storage, or related industries, preferably within a technical advisory, developer, or lender environment.
  • Proven experience performing contract and financial-model reviews for energy infrastructure projects.
  • Strong understanding of project finance concepts, risk assessment, and bankability considerations.
  • Demonstrated ability to work within multidisciplinary teams and manage multiple concurrent projects.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to convey complex information clearly to technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Strong commercial acumen and understanding of how technical and contractual factors influence project economics.
  • Proven client-facing delivery experience and comfort interacting with senior stakeholders.
  • Ability and willingness to mentor junior staff and share expertise across the organization.
  • Familiarity with market, policy, and regulatory trends influencing the North American energy storage sector.

Responsibilities

  • Perform and lead technical due-diligence reviews for energy storage and solar + storage hybrid projects supporting financing, acquisition, and development activities.
  • Review and interpret project contracts-including EPC, interconnection, PPA, O&M, and major supply agreements-to identify technical and commercial risks.
  • Analyze and validate financial models, assessing CAPEX, OPEX, warranties, degradation, performance assumptions, and other key financial drivers.
  • Evaluate project energy use cases, operating profiles, and dispatch strategies to ensure alignment with technical capabilities and market conditions.
  • Compile and complete IE and TA reports, summarizing findings, conclusions, and recommendations to ensure clarity, quality, and consistency.
  • Integrate multidisciplinary input (engineering, financial, and environmental) to ensure a coherent and technically sound final deliverable.
  • Collaborate with Project Managers to align technical work with project scope, schedule, and budget, supporting on-time and on-budget delivery.
  • Engage directly with clients, lenders, and developers, presenting technical results, responding to comments, and maintaining professional client relationships.
  • Identify and communicate project risks and mitigation strategies, applying lessons learned and best practices.
  • Support business development, including supporting proposal preparation and strategic client outreach.
  • Represent UL Solutions externally at conferences and industry events, contributing to thought leadership within the renewables sector.
  • Mentor junior staff and provide guidance to peers across disciplines to strengthen technical and commercial capabilities within the organization.
  • Contribute to continuous improvement of internal tools, templates, and methodologies for due-diligence and advisory services.
  • Occasionally travel (< 10%) for conferences, client meetings, and project deliverables.
