About The Position

The Senior Project Accountant manages the full billing lifecycle for government and commercial contracts, ensuring accurate invoicing, regulatory compliance, and timely revenue recognition. This role serves as a subject matter expert in federal contract accounting and supports operational teams through billing oversight, reconciliation, staff training, and issue resolution. The Senior Project Accountant provides leadership to junior billing staff and plays a key role in maintaining strong internal controls, audit readiness, and customer relationships.

Requirements

  • Associate’s degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field (or equivalent experience)
  • Minimum of five (5) years of project accounting or billing experience, preferably in federal government contracting
  • Strong knowledge of federal invoicing procedures and funding structures
  • Proven experience managing high-volume billing environments
  • Demonstrated ability to reconcile unbilled expenses and resolve aged receivables
  • Experience submitting invoices through electronic systems including WAWF, IPP, VIPERS, and customer portals
  • Proficiency in Deltek Costpoint AR, AP, and Billing modules
  • Prior experience training and mentoring accounting or billing staff
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Excel and accounting systems
  • Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills
  • Ability to prioritize multiple projects, meetings, and deadlines
  • Working knowledge of GAAP and FAR
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office products, particularly Excel
  • Strong English verbal and written communication skills
  • Proactive approach to researching and resolving issues

Responsibilities

  • Maintain comprehensive knowledge of federal contract accounting procedures, funding mechanisms, and compliance requirements
  • Prepare and submit customer invoices across multiple contracts and customers in a high-volume billing environment
  • Perform monthly reconciliation of unbilled expenses and ensure timely billing of all allowable costs
  • Research, analyze, and resolve aging invoices in coordination with customers and internal stakeholders
  • Submit invoices electronically via customer portals, email, IPP, VIPERS, and Wide Area Workflow (WAWF)
  • Resolve complex billing discrepancies in collaboration with project controls, contracts, and finance teams
  • Serve as a primary point of contact for billing questions and customer inquiries
  • Train and onboard new billing staff, ensuring adherence to established processes and quality standards
  • Provide ongoing guidance and support to billers and project accounting personnel
  • Prepare performance evaluations for billing employees and contribute to professional development planning
  • Ensure compliance with contract terms, FAR/DFARS requirements, GAAP, and internal accounting policies
  • Assist with audits, financial reporting, and ad hoc accounting projects as assigned
  • Recommend and implement process improvements to enhance billing accuracy, efficiency, and cash flow
