About The Position

The Civil Engineer (P4) supports the planning, design, and delivery of aviation infrastructure projects and serves as a key technical contributor within multidisciplinary project teams. This role applies advanced civil engineering principles to airfield and landside infrastructure projects including airfield geometry, grading, drainage, pavement systems, utilities, and construction phasing. The Civil Engineer leads the preparation of design elements, performs technical analyses, and coordinates with internal disciplines, airport stakeholders, and regulatory agencies to deliver safe, compliant, and constructible aviation infrastructure projects. The position requires strong technical judgment, increasing project responsibility, and the ability to mentor junior staff while supporting project managers in the successful delivery of aviation design projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering or closely related discipline (or equivalent experience).
  • Typically 5 to 7 years of relevant post-education civil engineering experience, preferably with aviation or transportation infrastructure projects.
  • Engineer in Training (EIT) certification required; Professional Engineer (PE) licensure or ability to obtain within a reasonable timeframe preferred.
  • Strong knowledge of civil engineering principles and their application to infrastructure planning, design, and construction.
  • Experience preparing civil engineering design documents including plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports.
  • Working knowledge of FAA Advisory Circulars, airport design standards, and aviation regulatory requirements.
  • Ability to perform engineering calculations, develop design solutions, and interpret plans, specifications, and technical guidance.
  • Experience coordinating with multidisciplinary engineering teams and supporting design development through multiple project phases.
  • Proficiency with civil engineering design software such as AutoCAD Civil 3D for the development of airfield and landside infrastructure design plans, including grading, drainage, and pavement layouts.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to present technical information to both technical and non-technical audiences.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, work independently, and contribute to collaborative project teams.
  • Demonstrated commitment to workplace safety, ethical conduct, and adherence to company policies and procedures.

Nice To Haves

  • Professional Engineer (PE) license.
  • Direct experience supporting airfield design projects such as runway, taxiway, apron, or airfield pavement rehabilitation projects.
  • Familiarity with airport operational constraints, construction phasing in active airfields, and FAA coordination processes.
  • Experience mentoring junior engineers or coordinating technical tasks within project teams.
  • Experience supporting airport clients such as airport authorities, municipalities, or aviation agencies.

Responsibilities

  • Perform professional civil engineering design and analysis for aviation infrastructure projects including airfield and landside improvements such as runways, taxiways, aprons, roadway systems, utilities, grading, and drainage.
  • Develop engineering designs, calculations, and technical documentation in accordance with FAA Advisory Circulars, airport design standards, and applicable federal, state, and local regulations.
  • Lead the preparation of construction plans, specifications, cost estimates, and technical reports for aviation infrastructure projects.
  • Develop and evaluate airfield geometry, pavement layouts, grading concepts, and drainage systems to support safe and efficient airport operations.
  • Support the development of construction phasing and sequencing plans that maintain airport operations and minimize impacts to airfield and terminal activities.
  • Coordinate design tasks across multiple disciplines including airfield engineering, utilities, environmental, structural, electrical, and planning teams.
  • Interpret survey data, GIS information, subsurface utility data, geotechnical reports, and existing conditions to support project development and engineering design.
  • Prepare technical calculations, exhibits, figures, and reports to document engineering analyses and support internal QA/QC reviews and client submittals.
  • Participate in meetings with airport sponsors, regulatory agencies, and stakeholders to present technical information and support project coordination.
  • Assist project managers with task management, schedule coordination, and monitoring of project budgets for assigned work elements.
  • Provide guidance and mentorship to entry-level engineers and technical staff, supporting their professional development and technical growth.
  • Ensure compliance with established QA/QC procedures and maintain high standards for technical accuracy and documentation.
  • Remain current in aviation engineering practices, FAA design standards, and emerging technologies relevant to airport infrastructure projects.
  • Exercise responsible and ethical decision-making regarding company resources and adhere to WSP’s Code of Conduct and related policies.
  • Perform additional responsibilities as required by project or business needs.

Benefits

  • Employees are also afforded a comprehensive suite of benefits including medical, dental, vision, disability, life, and retirement savings focused on providing health and financial stability throughout the employee’s career.
