About The Position

The Storytelling team works to expand the organization's impact through journalism, photography, film/video, web content, mapping, asset management, and data visualization. As one of the largest funders to individual storytellers in this work, it also identifies key grantmaking and fellowship opportunities with creative talent. Much of the team's programmatic activity is focused on identifying and building capacity for the next generation of diverse storytellers. The division's Impact Story Lab (ISL) builds on National Geographic's legacy as a global leader in using storytelling to drive positive change. We partner with Explorers to produce world-class film, audio, photography, VR/AR experiences, and other media that further the goals of NGS programs. By combining creative excellence with groundbreaking research, we advance the field of “impact media” and contribute to National Geographic Society's mission of illuminating and protecting the wonder of our world. The Senior Producer, Impact Story Lab develops and produces a diverse portfolio of media that furthers the mission of the National Geographic Society. Under the guidance of and in consultation with the Impact Story Lab senior team, the Senior Producer contributes to media strategy, builds workplans, and executes media productions ranging from short web videos, to high-profile event media, to television content. The Senior Producer manages relationships with multiple internal and external stakeholders, collaborates across the organization, and represents Storytelling at key project meetings. The Sr. Producer supervises a team of both staff and freelancers, oversees long-term planning and manages multiple projects at any given time. This is a fixed term role through the end of 2026.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree with coursework in media production as well subjects aligned with National Geographic's focus areas.
  • 10+ years of media production experience.
  • 5+ years of producer level experience.
  • 3+ years of management experience.
  • Record of ambitious, creative, innovative visual storytelling.
  • Proven success communicating science, geography, and cultural topics through media campaigns.
  • Professional management abilities and adept at media production for stakeholders outside of traditional media outlets.
  • Deep knowledge of shooting and editing.
  • Proficiency in at least one production skill (writing, shooting, editing, graphics, etc.).
  • Knowledge of standard video production workflows and Adobe Creative Suite.
  • Ability to work well as a part of a team, as well as independently.
  • Ability to prioritize tasks and possess a strong attention to detail.
  • Excellent written, verbal, communication, collaboration and interpersonal skills.
  • Experience creating new video production workflows.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel, and Powerpoint as well as the Google Office suite.

Responsibilities

  • Produce media that meets the highest National Geographic standards, bringing new creative ideas to every project.
  • In consultation with the Impact Story Lab senior team, develop and produce ambitious media projects in support of the NGS mission.
  • Lead projects through all phases of creative production including pre-production and planning, writing, field work, editing, and post.
  • In collaboration with the Impact Story Lab senior team, manage all aspects of production including schedules, budgets, and hiring of external vendors.
  • Oversee coordination of production logistics, including for complex field expeditions.
  • Ensure all projects deliver on time and on budget, and that all deliverables, including original photography and video footage and legal documentation, are properly archived.
  • Supervise project teams of staff and freelance Producers, Associate Producers, Editors, and other creative personnel and guide them through the production process.
  • Ensure that direct reports are producing according to NGS Impact Story Lab processes, policies and standards.
  • Occasionally operate camera and other production gear.
  • Edit projects to completion using Adobe Premiere.
  • Create graphics, original music, and other assets as needed and able.
