Northrop Grumman, Strategic Space Systems Division, has an opening for a Senior Principal Materials & Processes (M&P) Engineer specializing in metals and metallic processes, to join our team of qualified, diverse individuals. This position will be located in Redondo Beach, California. Please be aware that this position will be contingent upon capturing program award, obtaining customer funding, and holding final clearances prior to start date.

Requirements

  • Bachelor of Science (BS) in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 8 years of experience with a background in metallic materials; OR a Master of Science (MS) degree in a Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) discipline with a minimum of 6 years of experience with a background in metallic materials.
  • Experience with metal fabrication and design
  • Experience with repair processes for metal materials
  • Experience with the qualification of metals or metallurgical processes
  • Experience with material selection

Nice To Haves

  • Your ability to obtain and/or transfer and maintain the final adjudicated government clearance, and any program access(es) required for the position within a reasonable period of time, as determined by the company.
  • Master's Degree in discipline of Materials Science or similar
  • Subject Matter Expertise in one of the following areas: Metals joining (soldering, brazing, or welding), forgings, advanced material selection, or heat treatment.
  • Experience with spacecraft structures
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to collaborate in a team environment
  • Ability to prioritize multiple responsibilities and/or accomplishing them simultaneously
  • Ability to comprehend and analyze complex problems and develop solutions
  • Experience with military specs and standards
  • Experience interfacing with a military customer

Responsibilities

  • Performs root cause analysis of material failures
  • Provides effective solutions to production metallics issues
  • Generates test plans & reports
  • Analyzes, researches, designs and develops metallic materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures, systems and subsystems
  • Applies principles of chemistry, physics, and material behavior to develop metallic processing specifications, fabrication and assembly processes
  • Develops, analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables, processing processes and quality engineering specifications
  • Conducts material analyses, including failure analysis of components, systems and subsystems, life predictions, and definition and requirement specifications
  • Leads Tiger Team efforts in RCCAs related to metallurgical issues, presenting status to stakeholders and customers
  • Performs drawing reviews to ensure M&P requirements are satisfied
