About The Position
The Senior Principal IP Legal Counsel at Medtronic is a pivotal role responsible for managing the creation, communication, and effective execution of the intellectual property (IP) strategy, specifically supporting the Pelvic Health Operating Unit (OU). This position requires a highly motivated self-starter who can collaborate with senior leadership while also working independently to provide legal support for complex and fast-moving business operations. The role emphasizes the importance of delivering clear, concise, and actionable legal advice to business leaders and executive management. The ideal candidate will be excited about building IP strategies, executing them, advising on complex IP legal issues, and contributing to a collaborative and successful IP legal culture. In this role, the Senior Principal IP Counsel will protect Medtronic's pipeline by developing and implementing a global patent portfolio strategy, overseeing the preparation and prosecution of patent applications, and managing IP risk through global freedom to operate evaluations. The position also involves providing support on patent litigation, managing invention disclosures, and prioritizing filings that have the highest impact on Medtronic's R&D investments. Additionally, the counsel will analyze and develop actionable IP portfolios directed at competitors, ensuring ongoing awareness of competitors' products and activities, and consulting on agreements to support business operations. The Senior Principal IP Counsel will also play a strategic role in growing Medtronic's business by performing IP due diligence for mergers and acquisitions, managing stakeholder expectations, and partnering with various functions within the company to identify future opportunities. This position requires the ability to develop strategic relationships with operating unit leaders and educate key internal stakeholders on IP activities and outcomes.
