About The Position

Fermilab seeks a highly motivated Senior Principal Engineer in the Magnet Systems Department. The successful candidate will lead the design of a cryostat for the Electron Ion Collider and support the Cryostat L2 in the coordination of the design team for all EIC cryostat scope at FNAL. This individual is responsible for strategically deciding engineering programs needed to accomplish the overall objectives, critical issues, new concepts, and engineering policy matters of the Laboratory in compliance with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations, requirements and standards, and all Department of Energy orders. The Senior Principal Engineer enhances the national and international presence of projects through participation in and collaboration with project review and committees.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 15+ years of engineering experience, or a Master’s or PhD in an applicable Engineering discipline from an ABET accredited institution with 12+ years of engineering experience.
  • Advanced knowledge and proficiency in application of theories, concepts, principles, and methodology for the engineering discipline.
  • Possess extensive project planning skills in independently developing specifications and documents for major and technically complex, high-level, and highly visible engineering projects and engineering design solutions.
  • Ability to perform a variety of highly complex and highly advanced engineering techniques.

Responsibilities

  • Responsible for overall analysis of project team(s), recommending and overseeing the analyses and solutions to issues and problems.
  • Coordinate lab-wide activities of engineering groups and sets priorities for engineering efforts.
  • Negotiates critical and controversial issues with top-level engineers and senior management.
  • Analyze data and perform engineering calculations.
  • Develops specifications, designs, and documents for major and technically complex, high-level, and highly visible engineering projects and design solutions.
  • Plan and/or lead large or complex projects from inception to completion and brings them to operating status.
  • Estimates manpower, schedules work, coordinates and directs technicians.
  • Participate in procurement, as well as manufacture, installation, testing, and operation.
  • Lead the development of cost estimates, as well as the monitoring and/or management of budgetary obligations.
  • Review and approves work before hardware and financial resources are committed, ensuring conformance to specifications and cost/time constraints.
  • Apply new or unique methods and procedures.
  • Provides technical advice and expertise to other professions in a collective manner.
  • Considered the highest subject matter expert in engineering practices.
  • May manage the activities of engineering groups or departments.
  • Enhance the national and international presence of projects or the Lab through participation in and collaboration on project reviews, as well as participation in technical conferences and publication.
  • Serve on safety panels, review committees, and other subcommittees as assigned.
  • May serve as chair of subcommittee(s) or division/section committees.
  • May provide supervision or leadership of a team including hiring, promotions, performance reviews, training, disciplinary actions, team exits, and other duties as assigned.
  • Performs other duties as assigned by supervisor.
  • Abides by and is responsible for performing all duties in accordance with all environmental, health and safety regulations and practices pertinent to this position.
