About The Position

The Senior Power Systems Engineer plays a critical role in providing expert technical support for Flexible AC Transmission Systems (FACTS). This position requires a highly technical, customer-focused, and self-motivated individual. As a key member of this world-class team, the engineer will help drive technical strategy, high-level studies, new product introduction (NPI) and root cause analysis (RCA) for FACTS projects. The primary responsibilities include analyzing customer system-level requirements, performing studies, and developing strategies and high-level specifications for Synchronous Condenser (SC), Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC) and Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM) solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Systems Engineering with a focus in electrical, or Physics from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of related engineering experience or a Master’s Degree in Electrical Engineering, Electrical Power Engineering, Systems Engineering with a focus in electrical, or Physics from an accredited university or college
  • Minimum of 3-5 years of related engineering experience.
  • Detailed understanding of applicable IEEE, IEC and other industry and regulatory standards affecting design and operation.
  • Ability and willingness to travel up to 10% as required, which may include remote locations and international travel, and be willing to comply with all relevant company travel and tax policies
  • Legal authorization to work in the U.S. is required.
  • Any offer of employment is conditioned upon the successful completion of a drug screen (as applicable).

Nice To Haves

  • Understanding of grid-forming controls and virtual synchronous machine algorithms.
  • Generator or motor application experience is also acceptable.

Responsibilities

  • Synchronous Condenser (SC): Apply expertise in synchronous machines including theory, operation, and installation to develop and optimize synchronous condenser solutions.
  • Coordinate synchronous condenser system designs with machine factories and power system consultants including specifications for circuit breakers, cooling systems, starting pony motors, excitation systems and step-up transformers.
  • Conduct necessary calculations for equipment selection in synchronous condenser projects, including load (var) flow, short-circuit, and insulation coordination.
  • Fixed Series Capacitors (FSC): Perform, specify, and review studies related to the technical design strategy for FSCs.
  • Act as a senior reviewer for proposal and project execution as well as new product introduction (NPI) for above scope but, also including the protection and control hardware and software.
  • Perform hands-on work related to testing or development. May include time in labs or the field.
  • Static Synchronous Compensator (STATCOM): Apply expertise in the specification of valves, reactors and protection and control systems to develop STATCOM designs in compliance with customer and industry requirements.
  • Drive engineering tools strategy in development of FACTS solutions
  • Drive and approve standard designs for FACTS products reference solutions.
  • Develop and utilize Excel or coded (eg. Python, Matlab) based tools supporting the design and engineering of FACTS equipment.
  • Utilize specialized power systems software (e.g., PSS/E, DIgSILENT PowerFactory, PSCAD, ATP-EMTP, EasyPower, ASPEN OneLiner) to perform detailed transient and steady state analysis supporting equipment design and specification
  • Participate in industry working groups (IEEE, Cigre, IEC)
  • Knowledge of and experience using IEEE, IEC, ANSI, NEC, and NESC standards and codes, with the ability to engineer design packages without explicit customer specifications.
  • Knowledge of Real-Time Digital Simulation (RTDS) testing.
  • Experience in installation, field-testing, and commissioning of high voltage equipment, with a commitment to safe work habits.
  • Superior communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Provides direction, oversight, and coaches other engineers as a technical mentor
