About The Position

The Commercial Senior Portfolio Manager role is responsible for assisting Commercial Relationship Managers and Market Presidents with their client relationships for Midland States Bank include cultivating the existing Commercial Loan Portfolio for market expansion, analyzing credits with a view to making sound credit decisions, identifying credit risks, preparing loans for presentation to the loan committee. Activities will predominantly be associated with opening and renewing commercial loans along with any necessary reporting and maintenance. This position will require advanced knowledge of commercial loan policies, procedures, documentation and processing. This position focuses on building customer relationships and expanding existing customer relationships through excellent customer service and cross selling activities. This role will also function as an advocate for the clients inside the bank. It is expected that the Commercial Portfolio Manager II role will embrace Midland States Bank’s vision and values and represent those both internally and in the community in which they serve.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Business, Accounting.
  • 3-6 years related experience.
  • Successful completion of bank training specific to position.
  • Proficiency in computer applications.
  • Must have knowledge of commercial loan requirements and regulations.
  • Must have understanding of all company loan systems for commercial lending.
  • Strong and well developed interpersonal and communication skills.
  • Proven success of meeting or exceeding prior year’s goals for the periods preceding this position.

Nice To Haves

  • Previous experience in a credit analyst or commercial portfolio manager role would be strongly preferred.

Responsibilities

  • Manages a portfolio of commercial clients and loans (typically over $10mm).
  • Makes regular business development calls (independently or in conjunction with the Commercial Relationship Manager) to solicit new business or improve services to existing clients.
  • Generates new business through cross-selling activities with existing commercial client base.
  • Manages the credit process, identifies risks and mitigants on new and renewed loans.
  • Provides customer service to existing commercial customers, including research or referrals to other Departments of the Bank where applicable and corresponding follow up.
  • Assist their assigned RM with clients, acting as part of a RM team and as a proxy when needed. Will also be the backup with their assigned CSA.
  • Order appraisals, environmental documentation, or other complex documents needed for closing.
  • Ability to analyze both simple and complex credits.
  • Attends and presents loan requests at committee meetings and reviews Credit Approval Forms prior to approval for accuracies, compliance and covenant items.
  • Review thoroughly and understand formation documents for various entities including corporations, partnerships, limited liability companies and trusts.
  • Oversees the routine maintenance and management of the subject portfolio, including the tickler system, financial reporting and loan reviews.
  • If completed by the field on a certain deal, construction draws are managed by the PM.
  • Effectively presents information and responds to questions from groups of managers, clients, and customers.
  • Ability to negotiate with Clients on behalf of the Bank.
  • Exercises independent judgment to plan and accomplish goals.
  • Represents the bank in civic and related activities with business associations, customers, and regulatory agencies.
  • Attends and participates in civic and business-related functions and otherwise promotes the bank’s image.
  • Is aware and well versed in the Credit Policy and Procedures.
  • Regional resource for training and support.
  • May manage staff as needed or requested.
  • The role requires occasional travel for training and team meetings, and willingness to travel periodically, to locations within market as needed.
  • May require work in a Midland office to ensure collaboration and support of internal and external customers.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations including, but not limited to, the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).
  • Other duties as assigned.
