About The Position

Advanced Energy United (United) is currently seeking a Senior Policy Principal to support our transmission policy and strategy work across states, regions, and wholesale markets. This Senior Policy Principal will develop and execute strategies across multiple teams and coalitions to advance and evolve United’s transmission goals, including the support of advanced transmission technologies, long-term regional and interregional transmission planning, alternative transmission financing strategies, and more. Reporting to our Managing Director of Policy and Strategy, this Senior Policy Principal will join a team of subject matter experts to provide insight, strategy, and experience to our on-the-ground policy teams that are engaged on state legislation, in public utility commission dockets, with governors, with transmission authorities, at Congress, and within regional transmission organizations (RTOs), to meaningfully expand transmission capacity across the country. The Senior Policy Principal will engage with our industry partners, represent United at events related to transmission, develop thought leadership, partake in and lead broad coalitions, oversee consultants, work with team members to develop strategic communications, handouts, webpages, and marketing materials that advance our priorities. The ideal candidates will have 7 to 10 years of experience, focused on the transmission and/or wholesale market space. They will bring technical expertise in transmission and the broader energy system at large, along with some understanding of state and regional energy regulatory environments and state legislative processes and politics. This position will include drafting legislation, legislative testimony, and regulatory comments, and working with external consultants, counsel, and expert witnesses. The ideal candidate will have experience in coalitional work managing various stakeholder perspectives, be highly collaborative, and able to juggle multiple projects in a fast-paced and dynamic team environment. They should be creative, flexible, and opportunistic, and able to support both strategic planning and day-to-day execution. Excellent writing skills are a must. Candidates must be able to travel to meet with members, stakeholders, and decisionmakers.

Requirements

  • Bachelors degree in Political Science, Public Policy, or Economics preferred or applicable comparable experience.
  • Seven to ten years of professional experience, of which a minimum of three are focused in clean energy sector, and specifically, in transmission or wholesale markets
  • Entrepreneurial approach, flexible attitude, and ability to operate independently, making decisions consistent with United’s mission/vision
  • Ability to handle multiple projects in a fast-paced environment;
  • Excellent interpersonal relationship-building and communications skills, both written and verbal.
  • Intellectual curiosity, inquisitive nature, and excellent listening and problem-solving skills.
  • Performance-oriented individual with a strong work ethic, demonstrated initiative and commitment to achieving goals.

Responsibilities

  • Lead development of transmission policy strategies for market growth, as well as identify future venues for policy and political success.
  • Work with United’s members to identify high-value opportunities for impact, and ensure that on-the-ground work is inclusive of various technologies and business models.
  • Organize member engagement events for direct decisionmaker engagement.
  • Participate in legislative, rulemaking, and administrative processes, as needed

  • Develop and maintain excellent working relationships with coalition partners, philanthropy, allies, media, and key legislative, regulatory, and administrative staff.
  • Work with United’s state, regional, and federal teams to execute on short- and long-term policy goals in key states across legislative, regulatory, administrative (e.g. governor’s office), wholesale market, and regional transmission authority venues;
  • Work with United’s communications staff to identify and seize opportunities to showcase stories about transmission. Draft press statements, write blog posts, participate in webinars, and create opportunities to showcase transmission;
  • Identify areas for United leadership, including in policy development and execution, and research and analysis;
  • Travel on an as needed basis (up to 25%) to targeted states for staff development, advocacy days, meetings with key allies and stakeholders, communications outreach, and industry events. This includes representing United on panels, in meetings, and with media.
