About The Position

The Senior Policy Advocate at Friends of the Earth is responsible for leading strategic policy advocacy campaigns aimed at promoting healthy, climate-friendly meals in K-12 schools. This role involves building relationships with key stakeholders, including Capitol Hill officials and food service professionals, to advance legislative priorities and expand the organization's climate-friendly school food program. The position requires a strong commitment to environmental and social justice, as well as the ability to communicate effectively and manage a diverse coalition of advocates.

Requirements

  • 6-8 years of experience in research, campaigning, or policy advocacy.
  • Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience.
  • Expert knowledge of child nutrition programs and sustainable food systems.
  • Understanding of legislative processes and strategic policy advocacy.
  • Commitment to environmental and social justice.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively in a fast-paced environment.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite.
  • Ability to manage multiple activities independently.
  • Willingness to travel locally (20%) and regionally/nationally (less than 15%).

Nice To Haves

  • At least two years of experience on Capitol Hill.
  • Management experience with interns and consultants.
  • Experience in policy research and quantitative analysis.
  • Familiarity with the National School Lunch Program and related policies.
  • Fundraising experience, including grant writing.
  • Established relationships with Capitol Hill offices and USDA officials.

Responsibilities

  • Set the strategic direction for campaigns promoting plant-forward menus in K-12 schools.
  • Cultivate relationships with Capitol Hill offices and state lawmakers to support legislative priorities.
  • Design and implement strategic campaign plans in collaboration with the Climate-Friendly Food team.
  • Track and analyze legislation and regulations related to child nutrition programs.
  • Conduct research and develop educational materials for various audiences.
  • Organize events such as webinars and policy briefings to promote campaign objectives.
  • Collaborate with the communications department to enhance campaign visibility through media.
  • Support fundraising efforts by contributing to proposals and cultivating donor relationships.
