About The Position

The Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) is ranked within the top 5 mid-size agencies through the Partnership for Public Service's Best Places to Work in the Federal Government Rankings! This Senior Policy Advisor position is located in the Office of Electric Reliability. FERC is an independent agency that regulates the interstate transmission of natural gas, oil, and electricity. The Commission also regulates natural gas and hydropower projects. As part of our goal, we are seeking highly skilled individuals to assist in carrying out the mission of our agency. The Commission is looking for an experienced senior leader to serve as the Senior Policy Advisor in the Office of Electric Reliability (OER). The Senior Policy Advisor, reporting directly to the Director and Deputy Director, OER, serves as a technical and program advisor. OER helps protect and improve the reliability and security of the nation's bulk power system through the effective regulatory oversight established by Congress and the President in the Energy Policy Act of 2005. This includes overseeing the development and review of mandatory and enforceable reliability standards, as well as ensuring compliance with the approved reliability standards by the users, owners, and operators of the bulk power system.

Requirements

  • You must be a U.S. Citizen or National.
  • You must provide your SF-50.
  • A one-year probationary period may be required.
  • A background investigation is required.
  • Generally, male applicants must be registered with the Selective Service.
  • You may be required to divest certain energy-related securities.

Responsibilities

  • Serving as a subject matter expert to the Commission, developing strategies, creative techniques, and/or innovative ideas to scope and execute studies of the electric power system to explore issues impacting the reliable performance of the bulk-power system.
  • Leading Commission staff interaction with the North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) and electric power industry representatives and provide policy guidance to respond to critical power system reliability issues.
  • Conducting extensive analysis and informing the Commission about relevant events and activities that impact the reliable operations of the bulk-power system through written memoranda and verbal briefings.
  • Directing, training, and mentoring junior staff through leading teams, providing authoritative policy guidance regarding complex ratemaking, tariff, and market design topics.
