About The Position

The Southern Poverty Law Center is seeking a Senior Policy Advisor to spearhead bold and visionary policy solutions that expand access to economic opportunity. The Senior Policy Advisor is responsible for leading strategic policy initiatives that expand pathways to economic opportunity, mobility for individuals in or near poverty, and expanding anti-discrimination civil rights protections, particularly in Black communities. This role requires an agile leader who blends creativity with strategic thinking and understands both the obstacles to economic opportunity and the deeper forces that drive them. The advisor will collaborate across teams and work with coalitions and policymakers to implement solutions that create an economy free of discrimination and where communities excluded from opportunity have the tools to thrive and build wealth.

  • A Master's degree.

Responsibilities

  • Draft policy materials (comments, letters, statements, testimony, talking points, fact sheets, recommendations) that articulate SPLC's positions, supported by legal and policy analysis, on federal legislation, regulations, and executive actions related to economic opportunity.
  • Analyze federal legislation and regulations, providing policy recommendations to internal and external stakeholders, including policymakers, community members, and partners.
  • Cultivate and maintain relationships with key members of Congress, staff, federal administration officials, legislators, and partners to advance the affirmative economic agenda.
  • Organize briefings to elevate research and policy writing and facilitate the drafting and presentation of SPLC testimony before Congressional committees and federal agencies.
  • Collaborate with policy teams (federal, research, and regional) and other departments to develop and implement strategic policy advocacy plans on relevant SPLC priorities.
  • Coordinate internal and external meetings; work with SPLC staff, stakeholders, ally organizations, and coalition partners to develop and execute advocacy strategies.
  • Work with the Communications Department to craft communication strategies for campaigns.
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of relevant state and federal law and policy issues to support advocacy efforts.
  • Train and mentor policy staff and externs/interns.
  • Perform other duties as assigned within the scope of the position.
  • Uphold our JEDI principles by seeking diverse collaborators and partners who contribute to the shared mission, vision, and values of the Center and Policy Department.

Benefits

  • Minimum starting salary of $148,500 annually, commensurate with experience.
