Senior Platform Engineer, Infrastructure

LendingTreeCharlotte, NC
2h$120,000 - $150,000Hybrid

About The Position

As a Senior Platform Engineer on the Infrastructure team, you will own complex systems and problem spaces end-to-end, solving ambiguous problems where the "right" answer isn't always known. You will architect subsystems while anticipating scale and failure modes, drive technical alignment across teams, and mentor junior engineers. This role requires someone who can break down complex projects into executable tasks, make technical tradeoffs between short-term and long-term business needs, and champion new techniques across the organization. You will be responsible for designing and maintaining our hybrid cloud infrastructure spanning Azure, AWS, and on-premises environments. You'll identify technical debt and refactor core infrastructure to improve velocity, solve the "hard" problems that stump others, and uphold quality standards across the team. This is a senior individual contributor role, where you'll act as a technical leader for infrastructure initiatives while actively growing the careers of junior engineers.

Requirements

  • 5-8+ years of experience in Platform Engineering, Infrastructure Engineering, or Systems Engineering
  • Proven track record of owning complex systems or problem spaces end-to-end
  • Experience in enterprise-scale environments, leading technical initiatives, and mentoring engineers
  • Demonstrated ability to solve ambiguous problems and make technical tradeoffs
  • Experience architecting subsystems while anticipating scale and failure modes
  • History of identifying technical debt and driving infrastructure improvements
  • Infrastructure as Code: Expert-level Terraform experience for multi-cloud infrastructure provisioning; ability to architect IaC at scale
  • Cloud Platforms: Deep experience with Azure (VMs, VNets, Storage, Entra ID, Azure DevOps) and AWS (EC2, VPC, S3, IAM, CloudFormation)
  • Virtualization: Expert knowledge of Hyper-V and VMware vSphere/ESXi administration, optimization, and troubleshooting
  • Operating Systems: Advanced administration of Windows Server (2016/2019/2022) and Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu, CentOS)
  • Identity Management: Strong experience with Active Directory, Group Policy, Entra ID (Azure AD), and federation services
  • Configuration Management: Experience with Ansible, Chef, Puppet, or similar configuration management tools
  • CI/CD: Experience building and maintaining pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Azure DevOps, GitLab CI)
  • Scripting & Automation: Proficiency in Python, PowerShell, and Bash; ability to build automation at scale
  • Monitoring & Observability: Experience with SumoLogic, Datadog, Prometheus, Grafana, or similar platforms
  • Networking: Solid understanding of TCP/IP, DNS, DHCP, VPNs, load balancing, and network security

  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills; ability to solve the "hard" problems
  • Leadership skills with demonstrated ability to mentor engineers and drive technical decisions
  • Excellent communication skills; can explain technical decisions to engineers and non-engineers alike
  • Ability to handle disagreements and trade-offs constructively; resolve conflicts across teams
  • Strong documentation skills with attention to detail
  • Bias for action combined with thoughtful consideration of long-term implications

Nice To Haves

  • Cloud certifications: Azure Solutions Architect Expert, AWS Solutions Architect Professional

  • Define scope for yourself and team members; take ownership of designs spanning multiple people's work
  • Design at solution level, considering upstream/downstream integration across the organization
  • Solve ambiguous infrastructure problems where the "right" answer isn't immediately known
  • Act as technical lead for infrastructure initiatives, breaking down complex projects into executable tasks
  • Architect infrastructure subsystems while anticipating scale and failure modes years in advance
  • Analyze and deconstruct complex systems, platforms, and processes to identify improvement opportunities
  • Design and implement cloud infrastructure solutions in Azure (VMs, VNets, Storage, Entra ID) and AWS (EC2, VPC, S3, IAM)

  • Design key metrics, monitoring, and alerting for infrastructure components
  • Implement observability solutions using SumoLogic, Datadog, or similar platforms
  • Manage high-pressure incident response for services and infrastructure you own
  • Lead team in coordinating deployments with proper communication and change management
  • Solve the "hard" problems that stump others; drive root cause analysis for complex issues
  • Ensure work follows engineering and security standards; solutions are extensible, optimized, and scalable
  • Document designs, team processes, and operational runbooks
  • Participate in on-call rotation to provide support for critical infrastructure
  • Drive technical alignment and foster collaboration across teams
  • Mentor and coach junior engineers; actively grow the careers of team members
  • Drive technical decisions across the team, handling disagreements and trade-offs constructively
