About The Position

Our Land Use Planning and Entitlements Team in Los Angeles has an opportunity for a talented and experienced Senior Planner to play an essential role in supporting our client - the Los Angeles County Department of Regional Planning. This is a part-time position, requiring a minimum commitment of 20 hours per week as a Psomas employee working remotely and at various LA County field offices. In response to the devastating Eaton and Palisades Fires, which destroyed or damaged over 18,000 structures across Los Angeles County, the Department of Regional Planning redirected staff to support disaster recovery. As a result, Psomas was brought on as a consultant to help maintain day-to-day project planning operations. This role will support ongoing efforts such as, but not limited to, project application processing, counseling the public virtually and at LA County Field Offices, and other daily planning functions to ensure overall efficiency, responsiveness and operational effectiveness during the disaster recovery period.

Requirements

  • Bachelors' Degree from an accredited college or university with a specialization in City/Urban Planning, Environmental Studies, Geography, Urban Studies, Public Administration, Public Policy, Landscape Architecture, Architecture, Urban Design, or a closely related field.
  • Minimum of 4 years of professional planning experience working directly with or providing contract planning services to a city or county-level public agency.
  • Ability to work remotely with no in-person managerial oversight while still completing assigned tasks on time
  • Ability to accommodate a changing work schedule and/or work location on short notice to respond to staffing needs
  • Submission of check-in and check-out emails summarizing completed tasks for each shift
  • High responsiveness to email, instant message, and phone communications
  • Adaptability to a high volume, complex work environment
  • Comfortable working with various data tracking systems to track and provide up-to-date information on tasks and assignments.

Nice To Haves

  • Ability to communicate land use and zoning concepts in Spanish a plus

Responsibilities

  • Processing development project applications and providing case management services
  • Providing responsive customer services by phone, by email, by mail, or in-person at various Field Offices including the Department's Headquarters
  • Tracking application status through various data management tools
  • Coordinating with various workgroups, task forces, or other County and State departments
  • Training and providing technical guidance to subordinate staff
  • Attending and making oral presentations at public hearings before the Hearing Officer, Regional Planning Commission, and/or Board of Supervisors
