About The Position

Under direct supervision, the Senior Phlebotomist procures blood specimens from the in-house and outpatient areas. Operates a variety of LIS terminals in order to process pathology specimens and reports. The Senior Phlebotomist assists in the development, training and monitoring of all phlebotomists.

Requirements

  • High School
  • 2 years phlebotomy experience
  • Knowledge of medical terminology
  • Skill in demonstrating customer service techniques
  • Skill in oral and written communication
  • Skill in performing basic arithmetic
  • Ability to recognize, analyze and solve problems

Responsibilities

  • Extracts blood from patients and performs all phlebotomy procedures according to established, aseptic venipuncture technique.
  • Coordinates and monitors activities of personnel engaged in drawing blood specimens from patients. Closely reviews work priorities and distributes work assignments according to Phlebotomists’ skills and abilities. Follows up to ensure work is completed. Ensures quality standards are met.
  • Assists in orienting and training new phlebotomists as well as other hospital personnel by demonstrating and explaining aseptic venipuncture technique.
  • Assists Supervisor with daily operations of all inpatient and outpatient areas. Ensures appropriate wait times for all customers.
  • Assists in any New Phlebotomy projects
  • Provides input into the development/revision of work procedures for assigned areas and evaluation process of employees.
  • Ensures statistics are completed on time.
  • Assists with the competency testing of all staff and ensures completion is done by designated date.
  • Assigns daily workload and ensures adequate coverage by developing the work schedule (including the On-Call schedule) in a timely and accurate manner.
  • Assists in operating and maintaining instruments and equipment in optimal working order, with proper documentation; prevent loss or abuse of equipment. Participates in ordering and maintaining supplies and inventory.
