Performs functions necessary for the support, treatment, measurement, or supplementation of the cardiopulmonary and circulatory system of patients during routine and/or long term (ventricular assist and /or extracorporeal membrane oxygenation) support. Active participation in the Vanderbilt Cardiovascular Perfusion Technology Program as a clinical, didactic and simulation instructor. Performs ancillary administrative, research, and simulation responsibilities. The perfusionist is independently responsible for a wide range of mechanical life support systems. This position is based in cardiac surgery department but due to the nature of the work provides clinical service throughout the institution on neonatal, infant, pediatric and adolescents. The technical complexity of this position requires the incumbent to have an understanding of cardiac, congenital pediatrics, pulmonary, vascular, and orthotopic transplantation procedures. Life support via cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) must be administered to a varied patient population safely and efficiently. The perfusionist conducts CPB independently, working closely with the surgeons, anesthesiologist, and nursing staff in order to tailor the perfusion to the needs of each patient.
