Job Summary Responsible for assisting with the daily activities in the Frozen Section Laboratory, including tissue procurement for research, and performs a wide variety of tasks in the processing of a case in surgical pathology including the accessioning, description, dissection, sampling, selection of tissue, generation of the gross description section of a surgical pathology report.

Requirements

  • NAACLS accredited Pathologists’ Assistant Master’s degree
  • PA (ASCP)
  • Experience as a pathologist assistant 2-3 years required
  • Extensive knowledge of human anatomy, tumor staging guidelines, and medical terminology.
  • Extensive knowledge of how to approach a wide variety of surgical specimens.
  • Must possess excellent technical dissection skills.
  • Knowledge of Universal Precautions and principles of laboratory safety.
  • Must have manual dexterity and motor coordination and be able to manipulate sharp instruments.
  • Must be able to lift approximately 20 pounds.

Responsibilities

  • Organizes workflow of clinical case processing, and tissue banking logs.
  • Ensures that research tissue is appropriately procured without compromising patient's diagnosis in a timely fashion.
  • Formally and informally instructs pathology residents, PA students, and medical students in the gross description, dissection, and sampling of surgical pathology specimens, including frozen section specimens.
  • Providing support to supervisors by coordinating resident training programs, assisting with SOP development, and facilitating competency assessments and training for new hires.
  • Recommends and implements policies and procedures necessary to maintain laboratory quality, efficiency and safety.
  • Follows department guidelines when presented with requests for the acquisition of specimens for departmental or inter-departmental purposes such as clinical studies, teaching, and research.
  • Assists staff in preparation of case materials or photographic material for clinical or research conferences or special studies.
  • Performs other duties as assigned
