About The Position

The Tech-Eng Imaging and Vision team develops cutting-edge Google Pixel hardware. As an Opto-Mechanical Engineer, you will be instrumental in architecting next-generation devices used by millions globally. From initial design, prototyping to final validation phase, we develop the opto-mechanical architecture that defines Pixel’s hardware as a vital bridge between Product Development (PD) and Optics teams. Join the innovative Pixel Optics team as a Senior Opto-Mechanical Engineer. You will be instrumental in the end-to-end development of advanced opto-mechanical systems for future Pixel products, specializing in next generation hardware products. You will support cross-functional efforts to define opto-mechanical architectures and ensure manufacturability, leveraging your knowledge of Augmented Reality (AR) mechanical systems to solve complex, ambiguity-driven design challenges.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Computer Science, Physics, or a specialized field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP, etc.), or equivalent practical experience.
  • 4 years of experience designing mechanical components such as optical elements, plastic or metal parts, mechanical assemblies, printed circuit boards, or flexes.
  • Experience with precision alignment for opto-mechanical assemblies.
  • Experience with optomechanical assemblies, Design for Manufacturability (DFM), Design for Assembly (DFA), or optical systems with tolerance analyses.
  • Experience with Coefficient of Thermal Expansion (CTE) mis-match in optical systems.

Nice To Haves

  • Master's degree or PhD in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Physics, or a related field (e.g., Optics, Sensors, Audio/DSP).
  • 5 years of experience with opto-mechanical system design for mass production.
  • Experience optimizing designs for precision optical systems, including kinematic design and tolerance analyses.
  • Experience with multidisciplinary STOP analysis (structural-thermal-optical-performance), including experience in translating simulation results to deliver complete system analysis, and physical testing for design validation.
  • Experience with optical systems, cameras, sensors, or display technologies, including system-level understanding.
  • Proficiency in end-to-end consumer hardware development processes, with the ability to adapt strategies from initial prototypes to large-scale manufacturing.

Responsibilities

  • Serve as an optomechanical design, development, and implementation engineer for display system assembly, working with PD, waveguide and ophthalmic cross-functional team members.
  • Own and develop comprehensive requirements documents and tolerance analyses to ensure performance and reliability of optomechanical systems.
  • Drive opto-mechanical Design for Manufacturability (DFM) and Design for Assembly (DFA) from early concept to mass production, working closely with internal teams and external vendors.
  • Collaborate with metrology to develop opto-mechanical strategies to devise modular fixtures for demo and measurement capabilities.
  • Translate STOP analyses for opto-mechanical design optimization.
