About The Position

We’re looking for an Optical Engineer (OE) to join our New Product Development group, in which you’ll work within a multidisciplinary and collaborative environment to design, develop, maintain, and improve, and design products across our wide range of product lines. This position reports to the Engineering Manager II. This is a great opportunity for someone who enjoys working individually and collaboratively, staying on top of tasks, and making a meaningful impact across teams and projects.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Optical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or Physics
  • 8 plus years of experience in product design for industrial applications

Nice To Haves

  • Strong understanding of Geometrical optics, Physical optics, Imaging systems, and Laser optics.
  • Strong analytical and statistical skills such as conducting tolerance analysis and optimizing system performance.
  • Working knowledge of optical design and analysis software such as Zemax.
  • Experience with optical metrology such as profilometry, spot size measurements, focal length measurements, and spectroscopy.
  • Basic electronics (testing and schematics) and mechanical (GD&T and drawings) knowledge.
  • Familiarity with optical fabrication processes, particularly injection molded plastic and glass lenses.
  • Experience working with suppliers.
  • Good organizational and communication skills.
  • Able to travel up to 10% to remote production facilities.

Responsibilities

  • Design optical systems and / or subsystem(s) for new industrial sensors based on LED, laser, radar, and future sensing technologies
  • Research and prototype new technologies
  • Modify and enhance new products based on customer feedback
  • Support customer applications by verifying application feasibility or investigating application issues
  • Learn Banner technologies, processes, and product lines
  • Support product development efforts within cross-functional teams
  • Verify performance through component, subassembly, and sensor level testing
  • Stay current in best OE practices for metrology and analysis
  • Confer with Banner’s Purchasing department and outside vendors to qualify optical components
  • Occasional travel to remote production facilities as needed
  • Other duties as assigned
