About The Position

The University of Washington is seeking a full-time Senior Oceanographer to join the Applied Physics Laboratory's Air-Sea Interaction and Remote Sensing (AIRS) team. Requirements

  • Doctoral degree in Oceanography or related field and 6 years of experience.
  • Developing recognition as a national or international authority in the field.
  • Ability to integrate various instruments and approaches for cohesive understanding of ocean processes.
  • Strong organizational, execution, and coordination skills for successful research programs.

Responsibilities

  • Conceives and develops technical strategy and plans research to answer complex scientific questions.
  • Develops collaborative research relationships and coordinates plans with peer scientists.
  • Oversees scientific progress in research projects, including theoretical analysis and modeling preparation.
  • Monitors quality and content of research tools and makes real-time decisions on research activities.
  • Conducts and manages research tools and techniques, analysis, and synthesis to arrive at scientific conclusions.
  • Directs fieldwork activities and oversees all related logistics.
  • Forms partnerships with colleagues to accomplish research goals.
  • Shares results with the scientific community through presentations and publications.
  • Pursues research funding opportunities and writes proposals for funding.
  • Maintains relationships with research partners and funders.
  • Supervises field engineers, junior engineers, and lab staff.
  • Serves as advisor and mentor to students and postdocs.
  • Manages grant spending and prepares reports to sponsors.
