Requirements

  • Brings deep knowledge of occupational health and safety regulations and practices

  • Can work independently and as part of a cohesive, mission-driven team
  • Bachelor's Degree in Occupational Health and Safety, Industrial Hygiene, Business, Safety Management, or related field
  • 5 to 7 years' experience in health and safety, industrial hygiene, program management, audits, or a related field
  • Valid North Carolina Class C Driver's License with a satisfactory driving record, or the ability to obtain within 60 days of hire
  • Principles and practices of program administration and management
  • Principles and methods of qualitative and quantitative research
  • Principles and applications of critical thinking and analysis
  • Best practices, trends and emerging technologies
  • Standards of workplace safety and health engineering and emergency planning
  • Safety assessment methods
  • Applicable safety inspection procedures and practices
  • Applicable federal, state and local laws, codes, regulations
  • Modern office practices and procedures including the use of standard office equipment and computer applications such as word processing, database, and spreadsheet applications
  • Leading and managing a project or program
  • Researching industry trends, solutions and best practices

  • Interpreting, monitoring and reporting financial information and statistics

  • Monitoring compliance with safety regulations, standards and program policies
  • Provide guidance and counsel for regulatory compliance and assist in regulatory reporting

  • Design, deliver, facilitate, and evaluate safety training programs to educate employees on safety protocols and procedures

Responsibilities

  • Lead and support health and safety initiatives across departments
  • Conduct investigations, analyze trends, and implement process improvements
  • Collaborate with HR, departmental leaders, and external partners to ensure compliance and best practices
  • Serve as a subject-matter expert (SME) in occupational health and safety, providing guidance and training to stakeholders
  • Plans, organizes, and administers health and safety programs, and provides program leadership and management.
  • Advises and works with City staff on target and policy development, evaluation, and integration of programs.
  • Evaluates program results and recommends and coordinates program improvements
  • Conducts research and analysis of health and safety issues and identifies opportunities to develop strategies, policies, and programs.
  • Provides advice, guidance, and direction to departmental safety personnel concerning applicable regulations.
  • Liaises with regulatory agencies to establish and maintain program compliance
  • Leads the implementation of health and safety initiatives.
  • Reviews and analyzes accident and incident reports and safety violations; conducts investigations; makes recommendations for corrective action and responds to severe workplace injuries as needed
  • Leads the development and coordination of specialized education and training including new employee orientation and health and safety training programs.
  • Maintains records using a Safety Management System (SMS)
  • Conducts safety evaluations and incident investigations in various workplace settings, including but not limited to office spaces, laboratories, and warehouses, and coordinates government compliance inspections
  • Leads the departmental Safety Committee meetings.
  • Identifies and meets with other departments' Safety Team members to encourage consistency across the City
  • Reviews and recommends personal protective equipment and supply purchases with consideration for essential occupational health, safety, and environmental requirements.
  • Attends design reviews and makes recommendations
  • Compiles, analyzes, and interprets data; prepares and maintains reports, correspondence, and presentations
  • Promotes individual well-being with educational programming and materials (e.g., courses, workshops, special events, and interactive booths)
