About The Position

The Wall Street Journal's Opinion section is looking for a talented editor to join our growing editorial team in New York as a senior newsletter editor. We're looking for a high-energy, collaborative team player who is dedicated to high journalism standards, possesses excellent editing skills, and can work effectively under deadline pressure. This position would be responsible for leading a small team to grow our newsletter offerings, and requires a strong understanding of the newsletter format needs of audiences across multiple platforms. The primary goal of this role is to engage a new and broader audience, particularly those interested in cultural commentary, by delivering high-quality, compelling insights consistent with the Journal editorial page's free market philosophy while adopting a more personable tone and cultural lens. This Senior Newsletter Editor would report to the Lead Editor and partner with the editorial board and editorial features team to produce a premium newsletter sent five days a week.

Requirements

  • At least 7+ years of reporting and writing experience with newsletters.
  • A proven track record of building or editing newsletters that achieved measurable growth in subscribers and engagement.
  • Familiarity with the ideas, philosophy and principles for which the Wall Street Journal editorial page stands.
  • A demonstrated record of success in growing and engaging audiences via email.
  • High level of proficiency in writing, copy-editing and proofreading.
  • Exceptional editing skills and sound editorial judgement.
  • Demonstrate a command of editing and digital headline writing.
  • Familiarity with audience insights and newsroom analytics.
  • Management experience.
  • The ability to work under deadline pressure.
  • Flexible to do weekend/evening work as news developments may warrant.

Responsibilities

  • Write, curate and develop a five days-a-week premium newsletter with a heavy emphasis on cultural commentary.
  • Work with the Editorial Page Editor, Opinion Managing Editor, Lead Editor and other editorial page stakeholders to execute a clear strategy for the newsletter.
  • Collaborate with the Opinion section's data, SEO, and social media teams to build an audience.
  • Work with editorial board members, editorial writers, columnists and features editors to share their reporting in newsletter form.
  • Leverage newsletter best practices to drive subscriptions and conversions.
  • Develop strategies to build a community around the newsletter through interactive segments.
  • Use audience insights, A/B testing, and analytics to refine content, formats, and tone.
  • Experiment with voice, tone, and personalization to ensure newsletters feel direct and engaging.
  • Occasionally write persuasive opinion articles for the newsletter.
  • Participate in editorial board meetings.
