About The Position

We are seeking a highly meticulous and experienced Senior Medical Editor to join our team in Medical Education. The Senior Medical Editor plays a pivotal role in ensuring the scientific accuracy, clinical integrity, regulatory compliance, and editorial quality of all educational and promotional materials developed for our pharmaceutical clients. Working closely with medical and account teams, as well as program management, project coordination, and creative staff, you will be the guardian of scientific truth and editorial excellence, meticulously reviewing content from concept to final production. This role requires an expert understanding of AMA Manual of Style, medical terminology, applicable therapeutic areas, regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDA, PhRMA), and pharmaceutical marketing best practices.

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a life science (e.g., Biology, Chemistry, Pharmacy), English, Journalism, Communications, or a related field.
  • Experience: 5-7+ years of dedicated medical editing experience, with a significant portion gained within a medical education or communications or publications agency.
  • Technical Skills: Expert-level proficiency in AMA Manual of Style, 11th edition.
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite (PowerPoint, Word, Excel) and Adobe Acrobat (for PDF annotation).
  • Proficiency with digital workflow/annotation tools (e.g., Ziflow).
  • Knowledge: Deep understanding of medical education and relevant therapeutic areas.
  • Proven ability to interpret and critically evaluate clinical data and scientific literature.
  • Additional Skills: Impeccable attention to detail and a keen eye for errors.
  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills.
  • Strong organizational and time management abilities.
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a team environment.

Responsibilities

  • Copyedit, proofread and fact-check, when applicable, for a wide range of Medical Education Materials (e.g., slide decks, scientific platforms, educational narratives, congress collateral, infographics, executive summaries, digital assets, etc.)
  • Ensure impeccable grammar, spelling, punctuation, syntax, and adherence to house style guides, client-specific style guides, global vs US spelling, and the AMA Manual of Style.
  • Review for clarity, conciseness, consistency, flow, and appropriate tone/voice for target audiences (HCPs, patients).
  • Fact-check scientific content from annotations provided by medical team utilizing source documents (e.g., publications, clinical trial reports, journal articles, prescribing information, client supplied data/information).
  • Verify the accurate representation of clinical data.
  • Identify and resolve any inconsistencies, ambiguities, or potential misrepresentations in content.
  • Strong familiarity with editorial best practices for reviewing and marking up content developed in visual platforms, especially PowerPoint and Ziflow.
  • Familiarity with SharePoint for file sharing and version control.
  • Ensure all materials comply with relevant regulatory guidelines (e.g., FDA, EMEA, global labels and licenses) and industry codes (e.g., PhRMA guidelines).
  • Understand and apply client-specific compliance requirements and legal disclaimers.
  • Verify the accuracy and proper formatting of all references, ensuring content is appropriately linked to source documents.
  • Manage and organize reference libraries for projects, often using digital annotation tools.
  • Identify need for necessary permissions for developed content to ensure compliance with copyright requirements.
  • Collaborate effectively with cross-functional teams, including medical, account, program, and creative.
  • Act as a go-to resource for editorial and scientific questions within project teams.
  • May provide mentorship or guidance to junior editors or medical team members, fostering best practices and development as writers.
  • Proactively identify and recommend improvements to editorial processes and workflows.
  • Manage and maintain the in-house style guide.
  • Manage multiple projects simultaneously, prioritizing tasks to meet tight deadlines in a fast-paced agency environment.
  • Communicate clearly and effectively regarding project status, potential issues, and solutions.
