Senior Mechatronics Engineer

Epia NeuroAlameda, CA
Onsite

About The Position

Epia Neuro is a neural technology company developing intent-driven systems designed to restore function and independence for people living with neurological conditions. Its platform integrates implantable neural interfaces, adaptive algorithms, and assistive devices to translate neural intent into real-world action. The company’s initial focus is stroke-related motor impairment, with expansion into cognitive decline and other neurological disorders, focusing on long-term solutions for the growing aging population. We’re looking for a Senior Mechatronics Engineer who will bring technical expertise, ownership, and collaboration to drive the electro-mechanical development of the exoskeleton. As a Senior Mechatronics Engineer, you will report to the Robotics Manager and be responsible for collaborating with Mechanical, Electrical, and Controls Engineers to design and develop a hand exoskeleton system, bringing it from a benchtop prototype to clinical study readiness. This role is based out of the San Francisco Bay Area and expected to work on site from our Alameda Headquarters minimum 3 days a week.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Robotics, or a related field.
  • 5-7 years in robotics, mechatronics, or complex electromechanical systems.
  • Proven track record of developing integrated hardware systems from concept through validation.
  • Deep experience in system integration, testing, and debugging across hardware and software boundaries.
  • Experience leading architecture decisions for complex electromechanical or robotic systems.
  • Extensive experience with embedded firmware development and real-time systems.
  • Hands-on experience with actuators and sensors such as IMUs, encoders, load cells, and force/torque sensors.

Nice To Haves

  • Advanced degree (MS or PhD) in Robotics, Mechanical Engineering, Electrical Engineering, or related field.
  • Expertise in advanced control systems (torque, impedance, or model-based control).
  • CAD experience (e.g., SOLIDWORKS) and understanding of mechanical design principles.
  • Experience with rapid prototyping methods (3D printing, machining, etc.) and transitioning to production.
  • Prior experience mentoring engineers or leading cross-functional technical efforts.

Responsibilities

  • Drive electro-mechanical development of the exoskeleton from a benchtop prototype to scalable system with high performance and reliability.
  • Own end-to-end development of actuator modules and sensor subsystems (encoders, IMUs, force sensors) including requirements definition, design tradeoffs, integration strategy, and performance optimization.
  • Drive cross-functional integration across mechanical, electrical, firmware, and controls domains, ensuring robust system-level performance.
  • Develop embedded firmware for microcontrollers, including deterministic control loops and communication (SPI, I2C, UART, CAN).
  • Define and lead system-level validation strategies, including benchtop, hardware-in-the-loop (HIL), and full-system testing.
  • Develop test frameworks, automation tools, and data pipelines to characterize performance, reliability, and failure modes.
  • Drive root-cause analysis and resolution of complex cross-disciplinary issues spanning mechanical, electrical, and software domains.

Benefits

  • Competitive base salary with equity
  • 100% of healthcare coverage for you and your dependents
  • Generous vacation policy
  • Paid parental leave
  • Work from our beautiful waterfront office in Alameda, CA, with access to collaborative spaces and labs.
