The Raytheon Hardware Engineering Organization leads the hardware design, development and production support of a wide breadth of air, land, sea, and space systems. The Hardware Engineering team strives to be the premier organization for mechanical design and development through our world class people and technology - creating trusted, innovative solutions to make the world a safer place. Hardware Engineering’s capabilities encompass a broad range of technical disciplines which include engineering, technical services, materials, processes, analysis, test, and documentation. Within the Hardware Engineering Organization, the Undersea, Sensors & Structures (USS) Department leads the mechanical design, development, and integration of multiple sets of products, including but not limited to undersea sensors and analysis, naval platforms, shipboard/ground-based processing and power equipment, and launchers. The USS department is looking for a full-time Senior Mechanical Engineer, located in Portsmouth, RI.

  • Perform mechanical design, development, and documentation of components, sub-assemblies, and major end items for defense system equipment in accordance with system requirements.
  • Develop mechanical designs from initial concept to formal technical data package generation (engineering drawings, models) and culminating in initial builds, testing, transition to production, and production support.
  • Work with limited supervision and meet commitments for assigned schedule, financial, and technical goals.
  • Participate in design peer reviews, resolve action items, and conduct trade studies to make sound technical decisions.
  • Mentor and guide less experienced engineers.
  • Occasional CONUS travel to customer sites or suppliers is generally required.
  • Typically requires a Bachelor's Degree in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) and a minimum of 5 years of prior relevant experience.
  • A minimum of 5 years of experience in mechanical engineering design.
  • Experience with GD&T (ASME Y14.5), Tolerance Analysis, metal fabrication (machining, sheet metal), assembly joining techniques (fasteners, rivets, inserts).
  • The ability to obtain and maintain a U.S. government issued security clearance is required.
  • U.S. citizenship is required, as only U.S. citizens are eligible for a security clearance.
  • Experience in the specification, design, development, production and testing of electronics systems.
  • Specific knowledge of packaging electronic equipment to meet physical and environmental constraints is preferred.
  • Experience with Military and Commercial Specifications.
  • Experience with PTC CREO and PDM.
  • Experience managing financial and schedule performance of program level tasking.
  • Experience and certifications in Earned Value Project Management.
  • Demonstrated expertise in product assembly, fabrication methods, manufacturing processes and technologies including machined components & products.
  • Demonstrated ability to solve difficult problems while working as part of a team.
  • Experience in leading small development efforts and teams with cost and schedule responsibility.
  • Experience in selection of materials for structural, thermal, mechanical, electrical, producibility, and environmental considerations including corrosion mitigation and prevention.
  • Strong communication skillset with ability to articulate, in both oral and written form, to technical, non-technical and management audiences.
