Microsoft's Cloud Operations & Innovation (CO+I) is the engine that powers our cloud services. We are hiring a Senior Mechanical Engineer to join the Datacenter Operations team to validate new technologies before they are deployed in Microsoft Data Centers. As our New Technology Enablement Electrical Engineer, you will perform a key role in delivering the core infrastructure and foundational technologies for Microsoft's online services including Bing, Office 365, Xbox, OneDrive, CoPilot and the Microsoft Azure platform. Empower Billions! Our infrastructure is comprised of a large global portfolio of more than 100 datacenters and 1 million servers. Our foundation is built and managed by a team of subject matter experts working to support services for more than 1 billion customers and 20 million businesses in over 90 countries worldwide. With environmental sustainability and optimization at the forefront of our datacenter design and operations, we continue to grow and evolve as we meet the ever-changing business demands that hold Microsoft as a world-class cloud provider. Be at the forefront of the action in CO+I as part of our New Technology Enablement Team.

  • Own the mechanical integration of emerging datacenter technologies (e.g. liquid cooling, immersion cooling, rear door heat exchangers, advanced air systems, Tech water loops, heat pumps) into new build designs and global reference architectures.
  • Convert innovation into design to accelerate AI capacity deployment using scalable packages, tech roadmaps, and construction-ready documentation.
  • Lead pilot programs to define success criteria, test plans, and strategize measurement & verification (M&V), as well as execute site and lab pilots to validate performance, safety, maintainability, and operability; synthesize results into go/no go recommendations.
  • Develop functional performance test procedures and integrated systems testing for new technologies; support factory witness tests, site commissioning, and beneficial use/turnover activities.
  • Lead risk and safety checks such as HAZOP/FMEA for new systems ensuring compliance with relevant codes and standards (e.g., ASHRAE, NFPA, IEC); author method statements, safework procedures, and emergency response scenarios.
  • Identify equipment or installation quality issues, drive root cause analysis, implement corrective action plans and lessons learned.
  • Support documentation & training by producing as-built updates, O&M inputs, runbooks, troubleshooting guides, and training for regional operations and ensure turnover packages are complete and actionable.
  • Embody our culture and values.
  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • 3+ years in datacenter mechanical systems: CRAH/CRAC/MAU/AHU, chilled water plants, heat pumps, rear door heat exchangers, direct to chip/immersion cooling, and heat recovery systems.
  • 3+ years of experience working in critical environments.
  • Ability to meet Microsoft, customer and/or government security screening requirements.
  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience OR equivalent experience.
  • Experience integrating new thermal technologies (e.g., liquid cooling, advanced air systems, high density racks) into facility designs, including specifications, experience with optimized installation methods, and test/commissioning.
  • Proficiency in thermal/fluids analysis (e.g., CFD, heat transfer etc) and application to room/row/rack level cooling strategies.
  • Controls literacy: Sequences of operation, sensor/actuator selection, and BMS point mapping for mechanical systems.
  • Field execution: Experience with FAT/SAT, functional performance testing, and site commissioning.
  • Knowledge of codes/standards relevant to datacenter mechanical systems (e.g., ASHRAE TC 9.9 guidance, mechanical codes, pressure piping safety).
  • Experience with hydrogen fuel cell or alternative backup systems and their thermal integration.
