Join Surface’s technology development team as the ME lead for early concepts, owning rapid prototyping and validation of new mechanisms, materials, and system approaches. Requirements

  • Doctorate in Mechanical Engineering, or related field
  • OR Master's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 3+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR Bachelor's Degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 4+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR equivalent experience.

Nice To Haves

  • 11+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 8+ years related technical engineering experience
  • OR Master's degree in Mechanical Engineering, or related field AND 6+ years related technical engineering experience

  • Demonstrated ability to drive results in ambiguous early‑stage technology development, with strong prioritization, documentation discipline, and customer‑focused decision‑making.
  • Deep technical expertise in consumer product design, mechanical architecture, and hands‑on problem solving across complex system integrations.
  • Proven collaborator and adaptable team player who builds alignment across cross‑functional partners and leads initiatives without formal authority.
  • Innovation‑oriented mindset with a track record of creative solution generation, rapid learning, and pushing boundaries in new technology exploration.

Responsibilities

  • You will write internal specification sheets and interpret complex details for testing, then independently develop drawings for complex products or features.
  • You’ll also apply expertise in predictive modeling to moderately complex products and review documentation to ensure appropriate test requirements.
  • You will carry out testing on complex feature areas or products and create external testing and partner engagement plans.
  • You’ll identify highly complex design flaws using root-cause data analysis and validate features by building advanced prototypes.
  • You’ll create a project schedule, monitor performance, and help identify resources for the hardware engineering aspects of a complex feature or product.
  • You’ll also help develop products by guiding the team’s review of partner products and evaluating various details of materials and techniques used in production.
  • You will identify the most significant project risks, communicate team progress internally and externally, and create customized reports for products and features.
  • You’ll also document complex details about materials components, and functionality.
