About The Position

Current Lighting is seeking a Sr. Mechanical Engineer to join our progressive and dynamic fast-paced enterprise and device controls automation team. These are exciting times - our industry and user expectations are changing and so are we! We are developing the next generation of world class Internet of Things (IoT) connected lighting and building automation controls and applications. This is a hands-on technical role that will directly contribute to the development and expansion of our cutting-edge, cloud-connected IoT applications and offerings with the latest hardware and software technologies and tools. You will be part of our fast-growing innovative technology design center located in Round Rock, TX, a hi-tech hub north of Austin. We are looking for a talented and creative problem solver to design our products’ enclosures and sub-assemblies. You will be involved in the complete hardware development life cycle, from product concept to deployment in the field. This will require a strong technical background and a high degree of collaboration among highly talented, cross-functional, and geographically dispersed development teams. You will work closely with industry-best product owners, hardware and software engineers, and other development team members to understand the business needs, propose and develop end-to-end solutions.

Requirements

  • Bachelor’s degree in mechanical engineering from an accredited university
  • 5 or more years of mechanical design experience
  • 5 or more years of hands-on experience designing mechanical parts for injection molding, sheet metal and mechanical cable components
  • Proficiency in at least one mechanical CAD tool – On Shape, SolidWorks, etc.
  • Hands-on knowledge of various plastic and metal manufacturing technologies
  • Proven track record of collaboration with cross-functional teams
  • Self-driven with good sense of initiative
  • Working knowledge of engineering best-practices, methodologies, processes, and technologies
  • Expert ability to apply analytical and problem-solving skills to solve complex hardware design challenges
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills
  • Ability to support and influence technical decisions
  • Ability to work both independently and within a team

Nice To Haves

  • 5 or more years of experience designing consumer or large volume commercial products
  • Experience working with contract manufacturers and third-party vendors
  • Industrial design experience
  • Photonics design experience (light pipes, lenses)
  • Experience with Commercial and Industrial lighting control systems
  • Experience designing production test fixtures
  • Working knowledge of GDT (Geometrical Dimensioning and Tolerancing), PDM (Product Data Management), SAP

Responsibilities

  • Lead the end-to-end design and development of complex mechanical systems
  • Create mechanical designs of electronic enclosures for lighting and building automation control systems for indoor and outdoor use
  • Evaluate design tradeoffs and develop execution plans to meet all product goals
  • Propose and implement design changes for reliability improvement and cost savings
  • Create and maintain mechanical design documentation
  • Perform design feasibility analysis leveraging CAD rendering, 3D printing, mold flow analysis, and prototype runs
  • Coordinate manufacturing plants, contract manufacturers and suppliers to get quotations and release designs to production
  • Support new products through release to manufacturing and field deployment
  • Research, assess and adapt to new technologies necessary for future enhancements of products
  • Protect intellectual property through patent disclosures and applications
  • Support sustaining activities for existing products as necessary
  • Provide cost and schedule estimates to support managing project timelines
  • Verify completed components for fit and functionality
  • Work with Marketing to develop industrial design and product look and feel for new products
  • Meet regularly with the project teams to sync up on deliverables and provide progress updates
