Job Description Job Summary: Researches, plans, and designs and analyzes mechanical and electromechanical products and systems, and directs and coordinates activities involved in fabrication, operation, application, installation, and repair of mechanical or electromechanical products and systems used in industrial applications. Will at times be required to lead small engineering team (3-5 engineers) providing technical leadership, oversight and direction to the engineering team plus will be the primary interface to the Program Manager and/or lead project engineer . Applies knowledge of engineering principles to design products such as automated industrial systems and equipment, engines, instruments, controls, robots, machines, mechanisms, pressure vessels, process piping systems, gloveboxes etc. Required to be proficient working with 3D modeling software such as SolidWorks, preparing hand calculations, thermal, stress and structural analyses using FEA tool ANSYS or equivalent. Performing kinematic and kinetic analyses using multibody dynamics simulation software such as Adams Hexagon a strong plus. Required to prepare or oversee the preparation of designs for manufacture (DFM). Works on complex issues where analysis of situations or data requires an in-depth evaluation of variable factors. Relies on extensive experience and judgment to plan and accomplish goals. A wide degree of creativity and latitude is expected determine methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Exercises judgment in selecting methods, techniques and evaluation criteria for obtaining results. Networks with key contacts outside own area of expertise. Determines critical methods and procedures on new assignments and may coordinate activities of other personnel. Primarily works on the design of systems and equipment that support the DOE and commercial nuclear, including Advanced Reactor or Small Modular Reactor (Generation III, III + and Generation IV), fusion reactor and nuclear fuel processing markets.

Requirements

  • Bachelor's degree (B.S.) from four-year college or university in a related field and a minimum of 15 years of directly related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations.
  • Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public.
  • Ability to work with mathematical concepts such as probability and statistical inference, and fundamentals of plane and solid geometry and trigonometry.
  • Ability to apply trigonometry, calculus and statistics for design, analysis and problem solving.
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.
  • To perform this job successfully, an individual should be knowledgeable in using software conducive to presenting analytical results, such as charts, graphs, and presentations using Excel, PowerPoint, Access, etc.
  • Follows all import/export requirements, consulting with facility import/export personnel as required.
  • US Citizenship with ability to attain/maintain government security clearance.
  • Ability to travel (domestically/internationally) approximately _+/-10__%.

Nice To Haves

  • Active Professional Engineering License a strong plus
  • Experience working within the nuclear industry is a plus but not mandatory.
  • Basic Knowledge of ISO and/or AS9100
  • Working knowledge of Lean Manufacturing/6 Sigma/Kaizen
  • Knowledge of specific software (design, analysis, ERP…)
  • Working knowledge of ASME NQA-1 a strong plus
  • Active Licensed Professional Engineer a strong plus.
  • ASME VIII Certifying Engineer and/or a Section III, Appendix XXIII Certifying Engineer a strong plus.

Responsibilities

  • Develop designs based on customer and regulatory requirements.
  • Following systems engineering principles must be able to decompose requirements into tangible, manufacturable designs and verify and validate (V&V) the designs are compliant with those requirements
  • Develop designs for manufacture (DFM).
  • Create 3D models, and design and shop drawings using SolidWorks 3D modeling SW.
  • Working knowledge and ability to apply Geometric, Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) to designs.
  • Perform kinematic, stress, structural and thermal analyses on systems and equipment used in the Government and Commercial nuclear markets by preparing, reviewing and checking hand calculations, Finite Element Analyses (FEA) using ANSYS.
  • Ability to perform kinematic and kinetic analyses using multibody dynamic simulation software such Adams by Hexagon a strong plus.
  • Researches and analyzes data such as customer design proposal, specifications, and manuals to determine feasibility of design or application.
  • Designs products or systems such as instruments, controls, robots, engines, machines, and mechanical, thermal, hydraulic, or heat transfer systems.
  • May plan and direct other engineers in fabrication of equipment, and development of methods and procedures for testing products or systems.
  • Interface closely with systems and design engineering, manufacturing and testing and able to develop manufacturable designs.
  • Directs and coordinates fabrication and installation activities to ensure products and systems conform to engineering design and customer specifications.
  • Coordinates operation, maintenance, and repair activities to obtain optimum utilization of machines and equipment.
  • Designs products and systems to interface machines, hardware, and software.
  • Perform work utilizing principles of systems engineering per INCOSE, DOD 5000 or ISO/IEC/IEEE 15288
  • Write and review Design Basis Documents (DBDs), System Design Descriptions (SDD)
  • Write and review design and procurement specifications
  • Evaluates field installations and recommends design modifications to eliminate machine or system malfunctions.
  • Daily availability to include evenings and weekends when necessary to reach goals and deadlines.
  • Prepare proposals, develop estimates including prepare Basis of Estimates (BOEs).
  • Write and review reports. white papers and prepare calculations and reports per the rigors of ASME NQA-1
