Senior Mechanical Engineer (Onsite)

RTXRockford, IL

About The Position

The Senior Mechanical Engineer provides hands-on engineering support across mechanical design, sustaining engineering, and build, test, and production readiness activities. This role owns the execution of moderately complex mechanical work packages, supporting programs through design implementation, troubleshooting, and delivery of practical, technically sound solutions in both development and operational environments. While Test Equipment (TEQ) support remains a priority area, the role is broader in scope and includes mechanical design ownership, production support, and environmental and dynamic considerations to ensure robust performance and successful system integration. This role is intended for an engineer with strong depth in select focus areas—such as mechanical design, sustaining engineering, and test/TEQ support—combined with broad mechanical engineering capability across related disciplines. The engineer operates with a moderate level of autonomy, collaborating closely with peers, manufacturing, and test teams while appropriately escalating risks or impacts related to scope, cost, or schedule to leadership as needed. The position includes both analytical and hands-on involvement in vibration, shock, and dynamic environments, supporting test execution and design refinement to ensure hardware robustness, qualification, and compliance with program requirements.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a degree in Science, Technology, Engineering or Mathematics (STEM) and minimum 5 years prior relevant experience or an Advanced Degree in a related field and minimum 3 years of experience
  • Experience supporting mechanical design, integration, and release of components and assemblies
  • Demonstrated strength in troubleshooting, failure investigation, and root cause identification
  • Working knowledge of vibration, shock, and dynamic behavior, including exposure to test support or environmental qualification activities
  • Hands-on experience operating in laboratory and production environments, with a practical, solutions-oriented mindset
  • Ability to translate technical requirements into implementable design, test, and verification solutions

Nice To Haves

  • Experience with NX CAD and Teamcenter or similar PLM systems, including drawing release processes
  • Background working in lab and test environments, with general instrumentation awareness
  • Exposure to environmental testing methodologies such as sine/random vibration, shock testing, and shaker systems
  • Familiarity with basic structural, thermal, mechanical, or dynamic analysis (e.g., hand calculations or FEA exposure)
  • Ability to apply sound engineering judgment when evaluating test results and design tradeoffs
  • Experience participating in Root Cause & Corrective Action (RCCA) activities and Failure Review Boards (FRBs)
  • Exposure to dynamic analysis techniques or correlation of analytical predictions with test data

Responsibilities

  • Execute mechanical design and support activities across development, test, and production environments, including part and sub-assembly design, updates, and release support.
  • Provide sustaining engineering for released hardware including investigations, dispositions, design updates, and documentation support.
  • Support and develop test fixtures, tooling, and TEQ as needed to enable verification, troubleshooting, and production readiness.
  • Investigate build, test, and field issues; perform root cause analysis and implement corrective actions.
  • Support verification activities including test setup definition, requirements interpretation, execution support, and results documentation.
  • Support vibration, shock, and dynamic testing, including shaker test setup definition, fixture considerations, execution support, and results interpretation.
  • Apply engineering judgment to address dynamic response, durability, and environmental loading through a combination of analytical understanding and hands-on test experience.
  • Partner with manufacturing and operations on producibility improvements, process robustness, and issue resolution.
  • Coordinate with suppliers and vendors for fabrication, modification, and qualification of fixtures, tooling, and test assets.
  • Communicate technical findings, options, and recommendations to peers and leadership.
