In this position you will receive the opportunity to be mentored by Professional Engineers while you engage with our clients, evaluate their energy needs, develop concept-level plans and solutions, and take these through detailed design to provide for full execution of the solution. We offer and deliver a true "end-to-end" life-cycle service from exploration, development, operation, and repowering/retirement. Demonstrated abilities include a basic understanding of mechanical and process engineering disciplines. Prior experience in consulting and design engineering will be highly regarded. Your primary responsibilities will focus upon providing consulting, advisory, conceptualization, and design of data center cooling systems, district heating and cooling, thermal energy storage, and geothermal resources, working closely with our mechanical, energy, and geothermal engineering teams in North America. Specific tasks may include digital twin development of thermal energy assets and cooling systems in AI data center, piping and equipment sizing and selection, flow modeling, energy analysis, and life cycle cost evaluations, among other design engineering activities. You'll be expected to possess a strong grasp of engineering fundamentals, an understanding of mechanical engineering, excellent communication skills, and exceptional problem-solving skills with the confidence to explore innovative solutions. This position performs thermodynamic, technology, market, and economic analysis, with an emphasis on data center cooling and power generation systems infrastructure. Work may also include industrial process applications, water conservation goals, scope 1 and scope 2 emissions analysis, among others. The successful candidate will perform engineering/economic design of thermal energy networks and low- or no-emissions energy systems in cooperation with mechanical, thermal, chemical, control systems, electrical, geothermal scientific, and HVAC engineers. You will collaborate with our technical leadership, operations, client account managers and sales professionals on pursuits of strategic importance to the firm, and in the internal promotion of advanced transient simulation methods and tools as possible solutions for our existing multi-sector client base. You'll be expected to demonstrate collaboration and high levels of communication and problem-solving skills. The overall energy & power market, and the data center delivery market in particular, is experiencing an increase in activity with strong development growth. Requirements

  • Bachelor's or Advanced Degree in Mechanical Engineering or related engineering discipline
  • Professional Engineer (PE) license, or Engineer-in-Training (EIT) with ability to obtain PE license
  • At least 15 years of related design/consulting experience, or Master's degree plus at least 14 years of experience, or PhD plus at least 10 years of experience
  • Demonstrated ability for thermal energy systems modeling, techno-economic evaluations, and thermal energy storage investigations
  • Industry experience with data center cooling systems
  • Experience with transient and complex systems simulation programs or languages such as Modelica, TRNSYS, Simulink, and Aspen Plus
  • Experience with independently authoring differential algebraic equation (DAE) models
  • Co-simulation experience using Functional Mock-Up Interfaces (FMI) or similar co-simulation framework in scalable energy simulation products
  • Experience in computation speed and optimization of high-dimensional stiff models
  • Experience in developing reduced order models and application of advanced optimizers, e.g., CasADi, IPOPT etc.
  • Physics-based whole-building energy model development experience
  • Familiarity with Python, R or Julia programming languages
  • Experience managing projects and teams
  • Strong communication and technical writing skills

Nice To Haves

  • Familiarity with dynamic simulation models for data centers, district energy, HVAC control systems
  • Familiarity with data center facility and technical loop cooling systems for co-locate, hyperscale and AI data canters
  • Familiarity with the U.S. and international district energy systems
  • Familiarity and industry experience with geothermal systems, such as geothermal power, geothermal direct use, and geo-exchange district energy systems
  • Knowledge of U.S. DOE geothermal research trends and funding mechanisms
