At Karman+, we’re building spacecraft systems that will take us beyond Earth orbit, enabling the "Regolith Age" of asteroid mining. For the High Frontier mission, we need a seasoned and hands-on mechanical engineer to plan, lead, and execute the build of our autonomous asteroid-mining spacecraft. This is a critical role for an engineer who thrives in dynamic environments, meticulously defines lean processes, and enjoys leading complex integration What it takes to be successful in this role: As a Senior Mechanical Engineer on the Assembly, Integration, and Test (AI&T) team, you will own the end-to-end planning and execution of flight vehicle mechanical builds, leading technicians, and defining the standards that ensure mission success. This position is highly collaborative —you will work with every subsystem team (Avionics, Thermal, Propulsion, Software) and serve as a central figure coordinating the flow from component readiness to launch vehicle integration.

  • Take ownership of the planning and execution of subsystem builds
  • Panel preparations with inserts, fastener lubrication and kitting, and surface treatments.
  • Subsystems builds to individual panels (Ex, propulsion panel)
  • Take ownership of the planning and execution of vehicle builds
  • Define the build flow, what gets installed when and why
  • Oversee technicians and participate in installations to the flight vehicle
  • Ensure sufficient chassis grounding of all components
  • Harness and plumbing routing
  • Mechanical alignments and measurements
  • Write and execute work instructions
  • Lead day-to-day mechanical operations on the build floor
  • Coordinate with electrical test team to complete vehicle powered testing
  • Define and maintain mechanical integration processes and standards, including but not limited to…
  • Installation of threaded inserts
  • Epoxy preparation and application
  • MLI fabrication and installation
  • Thermal interface material cutting and installation
  • Fastener lubrication, torquing, and staking
  • Connector staking
  • Ground strap installation
  • Thermal strap installation
  • Harness/plumbing routing and securement
  • Cleaning and bakeouts
  • Thermocouple/thermistor application to surfaces
  • Help develop and refine inventory management systems
  • Continuously improve inventory processes to ensure good traceability without excessive procedural overhead
  • Maintain inventory and calibration records for tools, consumables, and flight parts
  • Maintain facilities such as cleanrooms and environmental test labs
  • Ensure cleanroom is stocked with all equipment and consumables needed for a space vehicle build campaign
  • Define cleanroom processes and ensure proper adherence
  • Maintain cleanroom cleaning logs and FOD control
  • Plan and execute unpowered vehicle tests
  • Solar array deployment
  • Vehicle mass measurement
  • Vehicle level vibration
  • Integrated system leak checks
  • Oversee propellant load and unload operations performed by fluids vendors
  • Create and enforce internal standards for safe handling of propellant and pressurized systems.
  • Plan and execute critical lift and vehicle transportation operations
  • Plan and execute mechanical integration to the launch vehicle
  • Hands-on experience planning and executing spacecraft builds
  • Strong understanding of industry standards and best practices
  • Ability to develop lean processes and work instructions
  • Experience executing a launch campaign
  • Knowledge of vibration and thermal testing
  • BS in Aerospace Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, or related technical field).
  • 5+ years of direct experience in spacecraft AI&T, mechanical integration, or related hardware build roles.
  • Hands-on experience executing a launch campaign, including coordination and integration to the launch vehicle (e.g., SpaceX transporter mission).
  • Experience defining harness standards and training others on process compliance.
  • Familiarity with configuration management tools and version-controlled documentation.
