About The Position

Johnson Controls is hiring! The Senior Mechanical Designer leads the design and development of HVAC equipment, owning mechanical solutions from concept through release. This role partners cross‑functionally with engineering, manufacturing, and testing teams to deliver innovative, reliable, and manufacturable products. As a technical subject matter expert, the Senior Mechanical Designer drives design quality, supports prototype and production efforts, and contributes to continuous improvement across assigned product platforms. Candidates must be commuting distance to Largo, FL, or able to relocate. Various relocation packages are available. Candidates must be US citizens and/or permanent resident, as sponsorship is not available.

Requirements

  • AAS in Mechanical Engineering or relevant discipline.
  • 4+ years of mechanical design experience in a product-based manufacturing environment.
  • Experience designing sheet-metal assemblies and mechanical HVAC components.
  • Proficiency with 3D CAD tools (SolidWorks preferred) and creation of detailed drawings and specifications.
  • Experience developing and maintaining mechanical BOMs.
  • Candidates must be US citizens and/or permanent resident, as sponsorship is not available.

Nice To Haves

  • Experience supporting prototype builds and laboratory testing.
  • Familiarity with HVAC manufacturing processes, including sheet-metal fabrication, fastening methods, insulation installation, brazing, and welding.
  • Knowledge of DFMA, cost optimization, and value engineering.

Responsibilities

  • Use SolidWorks, AutoCAD, and related tools to create and maintain 3D models, drawings, DXFs, and assemblies.
  • Develop innovative designs and solutions based on project specifications.
  • Execute the product development phase gate process to release new products and features.
  • Execute design improvements to optimize manufacturability and increase product quality.
  • Design and modify sheet metal and insulation parts and assemblies.
  • Design and modify hydronic components including heat exchangers (aluminum fin, copper tube, steel casing) and piping packages (valves, y-strainers, flow control devices)
  • Create assembly bill of materials containing sub parts, raw materials, and purchased components.
  • Collaborate with production to build prototype and mockup products.
  • Partner with the test lab to have prototypes tested for performance and reliability.
  • Accurately and quickly process customer orders by designing new components and bills of materials.
  • Maintain and update submittal documents and engineering design guides.
  • Initiate process improvements to reduce design time and increase organizational throughput.
