Senior Mechanical Design Engineer

Rivian and VW Group TechnologyIrvine, CA
5h$107,800 - $146,500

About The Position

You think of electronics packaging as a puzzle, fitting space, thermal, rigidity, and cost constraints; innately understanding the engineering tradeoffs that were made to achieve the desired goals. You understand manufacturability, draft angles, and flow rates. You are a critical thinker, an expeditor, and a problem solver. You love working with your hands and tools to get to the root of a problem and resolve it.

Requirements

  • Minimum Bachelors of Science in Mechanical Engineering
  • The ideal candidate will possess 4+ years of professional experience in mechanical design, with a proven track record of taking complex electronic modules from concept through production.
  • Experience in die-casting, sheet metal stamping, and injection molded plastics for electronic packaging designs
  • Extensive experience using CAD tools, Catia V5 or V6 preferred.
  • Knowledge of mechanical constraints and requirements for PCBAs and how to communicate and collaborate on those with Electrical Engineers and ECAD
  • Experience creating, conducting, and interpreting thermal and mechanical simulations, Ansys experience preferred
  • Design for thermal, vibration, and EMC
  • Experience conducting closed loop tolerance analysis for complex assemblies
  • Familiar with GD&T requirements

Responsibilities

  • Electronics Packaging Design and Release – You will work on all aspects of electronics packaging design for internally designed components at Rivian Volkswagen Technologies. You will work with a multidisciplinary team to define packaging space requirements within the vehicle. You will design enclosures and mechanical assemblies for infotainment, connectivity, vehicle access, body control systems, and battery management that meet strict thermal, environmental, and EMC requirements. You will be responsible for ensuring designs meet automotive requirements, including drawing GD&T, materials selection, thermal management, vibration, shock tolerance, module takt time, manufacturability, and mechanical acceptance. You will be responsible for releasing components into PLM systems
  • Production Management – You will work with suppliers to make sure your designs are optimized for high volume manufacturing, while meeting all performance targets. You will be review and approve tooling and first tooled parts for mass production
  • Mechanical Validation - You will coordinate with reliability and test and validation to identify the mechanical shock and vibration levels for your product. You will perform or coordinate CAE analysis for thermal and vibration durability simulations. You will be aiding in the mechanical validation of your product, including fixture design and failure analysis in order to ensure the product meets environmental durability and reliability standards.
  • Vehicle Level Integration – You will work with vehicle integration to determine packaging envelopes, and ensure your designs are integrated and properly mounted in the vehicle. You will be responsible for the mechanical performance of the module in the vehicle.
