About The Position

Noblis is currently seeking a Senior or Principal Model-Based Systems Engineer (MBSE) for our Surface Transportation Program. Noblis Surface Division has a team of 40+ professionals supporting multiple research, development, and deployment-focused programs for the U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT). These programs focus on using emerging technologies – including Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), connected vehicles, automated vehicles, Artificial Intelligence (AI), Digital Engineering, and other emerging mobility and smart city technologies – to transform how we travel – enhancing safety, improving mobility, and reducing transportation’s impact on the environment. We are positioning to grow our Surface Transportation Team with other terrific team members. This is an opportunity for someone with a background and experience in MBSE to support the U.S. DOT’s ITS programs. Noblis provides technical and programmatic support to the U.S. DOT ITS Joint Program Office (JPO) by planning and conducting research activities, coordinating technology deployment programs, promoting technologies and seeking disruptive innovation to transform the increasingly connected, automated, and electrified world of surface transportation systems. As a member of this dynamic team, you will participate in the following activities:

Requirements

  • Education: Bachelor’s of Science required. Master’s degree preferred. Degree(s) in a field such as: Systems Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Software Engineering, Industrial Engineering or a related fields
  • Experience & Work Eligibility 7+ years of MBSE experience required
  • Must be a U.S. Citizen or Permanent Resident / Green Card holder.
  • Writes a variety of technical documents and prepares and presents briefings
  • Ability to lead technical efforts and influence engineering teams without direct authority
  • Works independently to determine approach to and technical objectives of work assignments
  • Ensures client objectives for quality, schedule, and budget are met or exceeded through direct and creative approaches
  • Interacts with senior client representatives on significant technical and project matters
  • Identifies and develops solutions to program problems
  • Uses a variety of professional concepts and methodologies
  • Strong expertise in MBSE methodologies and frameworks (e.g. SysML, UAF, or MagicGrid)
  • Proficiency using MBSE tools to include Cameo / MagicDraw
  • Proven experience developing and maintaining System of System architecture models for complex systems
  • Proven experience with the concepts and application of government reference architecture (GRA)
  • Experience managing requirements, interfaces, and traceability within a model-based environment
  • Solid understanding of system lifecycle processes, including requirements definition, architecture, verification, and validation

Nice To Haves

  • An understanding of, and familiarity with, the following is a plus:
  • Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS)
  • Connected and automated vehicle technologies
  • Leader in MBSE
  • Exposure to scripting or automation to enhance MBSE workflows (e.g., Python, tool APIs, VTL)
  • Exposure to software messaging data structure definitions and ASN.1 standard
  • Familiarity with digital thread concepts and integrating MBSE with PLM, simulation, or data platforms
  • Experience with digital twins, simulation-based engineering, or system behavior modeling
  • Experience implementing Product Line Engineering (PLE) and model transformations

Responsibilities

  • Model-Based Systems Engineering content development, to include concepts of operations, requirements, and system design elements
  • Lead the application of MBSE across the system lifecycle as well as developing/maintain Vehicle to Everything (V2X) standards in MBSE models
  • Establish Role Based Access best practices and model federation techniques to integrate model data while protecting intellectual property
  • Define and manage system requirements within MBSE environments, including traceability to architecture, analysis, and verification artifacts
  • Collaborate with software, hardware, test, and standards teams to ensure model alignment with real-world implementation
  • Establish MBSE standards, best practices, and governance for tools, modeling patterns, and data exchange
  • Mentor and coach junior and mid-level engineers in MBSE methods and tools
  • Integrate simulation and test data back into MBSE models to maintain the authoritative source of truth (ASoT)
  • Communicate complex system architectures and trade studies clearly to technical and non-technical stakeholders
  • Perform architecture and requirement analysis and metrics in the MBSE tool
