About The Position

As part of our commitment to succession planning, the Senior Matron post is a role for experienced senior nursing staff who aspire to be excellent nurse leaders. The expectation in this role is that you will lead on corporate nursing responsibilities; offer support and act up in the absence of the Head of Nursing in preparation for your progression to a Head of Nursing and Chief Nursing Officer role in the future. The Senior Matron role is assigned their own directorate but will also oversee a cohort of other directorates via line management of a small group of Matrons within the Division. It is recognised that this Senior role requires experienced Matrons who have the knowledge and capacity to offer advice and support for more complex professional issues. This role is specifically to lead a group of services within the Adult Community and Primary Care directorates, overseeing effective service delivery and transformation to ensure achievement of the national strategic agenda regarding care closer to home. The Senior Matron will be a visible nurse leader and role model for a number of clinical areas with the responsibility and accountability for professional standards. They will be professionally accountable and maintain the standard of professional practice as set by the appropriate regulatory body applicable to their profession or role. They are accountable for identifying and ensuring improvements in patient safety, patient experience and effectiveness of service. In conjunction with the Clinical Director & Group/Directorate Manager, they will lead the implementation and delivery of the clinical service improvement plan and provide expert advice to the Group /Directorate on all nursing matters, ensuring effective contribution to the delivery of the organisation’s objectives.

Requirements

  • Experienced senior nursing staff
  • Experienced Matrons who have the knowledge and capacity to offer advice and support for more complex professional issues
  • Professional Registration (e.g. Nursing and Midwifery Council etc)
  • Proof of qualification (e.g. A-Levels, Degree etc)

Responsibilities

  • Be a visible nurse leader and role model for a number of clinical areas with the responsibility and accountability for professional standards.
  • Be professionally accountable and maintain the standard of professional practice as set by the appropriate regulatory body applicable to your profession or role.
  • Be accountable for identifying and ensuring improvements in patient safety, patient experience and effectiveness of service.
  • In conjunction with the Clinical Director & Group/Directorate Manager, lead the implementation and delivery of the clinical service improvement plan.
  • Provide expert advice to the Group /Directorate on all nursing matters.
  • Ensure effective contribution to the delivery of the organisation’s objectives.
  • Manage a devolved budget for a number of clinical areas ensuring efficient and effective use of resources.
  • Contribute to the planning and execution of cost improvement programmes ensuring the quality of care is risk assessed and managed appropriately.
  • Line manage matrons and nursing leads from a number of clinical areas including professional line of communication to research nurses and nurse specialists.
  • Act as lead specialist for specified projects within the Chief Nursing Officer’s portfolio.
  • In conjunction with the Divisional Head of Nursing lead on quality improvements to enhance the patient journey.
